*Hitting triple digits is not an uncommon occurrence for Tucson in July,
but when you combine 150+ youth and adults and 100 years for 4-H, it
becomes a very special occasion. The 6th annual 2002 Arizona 4-H Teen
Congress was held July 21-23 on the U of A campus. Youth and adults from
all fifteen counties as well as at least four reservations were in
attendance staying in the Cochise dorm. The kick-off recognition banquet
included Ernest Calderon, president of the State Bar Association, as a
motivational speaker. He's the first Hispanic elected to this position and
talked about the "ripples in the lake" as well as pulling together the
connection between the six pillars of character for 4-H and the law
profession. Donors, volunteers, State 4-H Ambassadors and 2002 National 4-H
Congress delegates were also recognized. A special salute was done for
Representative Jim Kolbe who was inducted as one of 100 into the National
4-H Hall of Fame. The youth and adults then participated in various
workshops ranging from food safety, equine science, bugs, plants,
communication skills, Character Counts!, quilting, building bridges,
keeping meetings exciting, and leadership. A key focus is the various
community service projects conducted within the Tucson community on Tuesday
morning. All attendees created a ceramic tile as part of the graffiti
abatement program and those tiles were then placed in a particular area of
Tucson. Of course, there were the fun activities to celebrate ranging from
dances and a carnival to an ice cream social and a Mexican fiesta! There is
a lot of opportunity to share, learn, and grow which keeps all who
participate "Forever Young" which was the theme of this year's Teen
Congress. The state 4-H Teen Council representatives, along with advisors
Bob Peterson and Brent Strickland, and the state 4-H office (Sandra Saad in
particular), assisted in the organization of the event. Yes, triple digits
can be quite "cool" when you are keeping "Forever Young" with 100 years of
4-H!!
*As a part of the CALS Faculty Conference Awards Program on August 29,
2002, we would like to honor those within the college who have won awards
since the last program. Lucy Bradley will be compiling an awards list to
be distributed at the luncheon. Would you please send her a listing of the
awards won by members of your department between 1/01/01- 9/01/02. Our
goal is two fold: we would like to recognize excellence within our faculty

there so they can strengthen their promotion and tenure packets. Please
include Faculty Name, Department, Award Name, Organization Providing Award
and Date. An Example: Monica Pastor, Maricopa County, Honorary American
FFA Degree, National FFA Organization, 10/26/01. The DEADLINE for

*WATCHING A DEMO CLASS WHILE IN YOUR OFFICE: ECAT is experimenting with
different ways to provide training and classes other than a face-to-face
mode, and will be offering four classes this summer using a
web-conferencing system from the University of Illinois. The class topics
and dates are: An Overview to Dreamweaver 4.0, July 17, 10-11:30; Web
Basics in Photoshop 6, July 31, 9-10:15; Web Basics in Fireworks 4, August
8, 9-10:15; Using the Rotating Script on the AgServer, August 13, 1-2:15.
What is different about these classes is that you take them while in your
office, using a phone (a conference phone call) so you can hear and ask
questions, and AT THE SAME TIME use the browser on your computer to connect
to a special website which will let you see the instructor's computer
screen. The cost of the system is $13 per hour. Following a class each
participant will be billed for the number of minutes the class lasted. More
details about the coverage of each class and its prerequisites are at
http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/. There is also a link on this page for
the registration form. If you are interested in taking a class using this
system, but the dates are not good for you, send a private email to
