I want to acknowledge and thank the CALS 2002 Faculty Conference committee who worked diligently on the success of the conference. Conference Chairs: Lisa Lauxman and Ed Martin. Co-Chairs: Lucy Bradley and Dotty Sherwood-Cooney. 2002 Conference Committee Members: Mark Arns, Barry Bequette, Robert Call, Timothy Dennehy, Mike Hauser, David Kerns, James Knight, William McCloskey, Scottie Misner, Barron Orr, Jeff Schalau, Ursula Schuch, Larry Sullivan, Darcy Tessman, James Walworth and Kennith Foster. "Special thanks" to Robert Armstrong, Sheila Merrigan and Robert Lanza. We were fortunate to have some dynamic speakers at the conference and would like to acknowledge the following: Author Baxter Black did a dynamic job as our guest luncheon speaker and we appreciated his gift in entertaining us and shared excerpts from his book; Jim Knight did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies for the Awards Luncheon and served as the Keynote speaker presenting "Teaching Effectiveness: Skill and Attitude". Thank you, Jim; Lee Weber-Koch, JoAnne Skelly, and Claudene Wharton, University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension presented "Tools of the Trade: Marketing Extension". During their presentation they repeatedly referred to the UA Cooperative Extension Marketing Manual. This information can be found at: http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/reference/marketman/. Next week we will list the conference award winners.

We are pleased to announce that Sharon Hoelscher Day, Maricopa County, Lynn A. Joens, Department of Veterinary Science and Microbiology and Michael E. Konkel, Washington State University, received a grant for $580,608 on the Assessment of the Pathogenicity of Campylobacter jejuni in Broilers.

Reminder that requests for proposals for Integrated Pest Management funds are due to Deborah Young on September 13, 2002. Each state receives federal funds from CSREES for Cooperative Extension programs in IPM. Federal guidelines require that IPM funds allocated to Arizona be spent solely on Extension programs. These funds are separate from the Regional IPM funds, which are allocated for both research and extension in a competitive process. For more information, see the RFP at http://cals.arizona.edu/internal/programs/ipmrfp02.pdf.

Southwest Issues in Agriculture Labor will present a workshop with the following topics: Ag Help Wanted: Guidelines for Managing Agricultural Labor (a new resource available both on-line and in print), Southwest Labor: More Than Just Agriculture, Battling Heat Stress in Agricultural Field Work, and Hot Topics in Labor and Employment Law. These will be offered on September 26, 2002 at the Maricopa County Cooperative Extension office, 4341 E. Broadway, Phoenix, AZ (602) 470-8086 and September 27, 2002 at the Yuma County Cooperative Extension office, 2200 W. 28th Street, Suite 102, (928) 726-3904.

Dave Cox will be conducting the annual sabbatic leave conference call which has been set for Thursday, September 12 at 11:00am and it is not too late to be a part of the call. If you are interested in becoming a candidate for sabbatical leave in 2003, you will want to be "on-line" for this discussion. The purpose of the call is to offer suggestions for successful submissions, to discuss the requirements for eligibility, and to share information on any new policies. Contact Steven Crofts at 621-7145 or scrofts@cals.arizona.edu to sign up for the call. Teleconference dial-in information and an agenda will be sent to participants prior to the call.
