Tuesday Morning Notes

September 24, 2002

I would like to thank all the faculty who made the Pecan Growers meeting a success (Bill McCloskey, Paul Brown, Barron Orr and Colin Kaltenbach). I would specifically like to praise and thank Rick Gibson, Jim Walworth, and Rob Call for picking up the slack in the vacant fruit and nuts position in Plant Sciences. Mike Kilby is still playing a major role in supporting and leading ongoing activities from his emeritus faculty position. With the 3 million dollars in state funds pulled out of the CALS budget (that's equal to 30+ faculty positions) for the 2002-2003 budget year and with the inability to hire this year, we appreciate the faculty stepping up to meet our commitment to agriculture.

Congratulations to Sheila Merrigan for the recent publication of the chapter "Grey Literature and Extension Resources" in the book "Using the Agricultural, Environmental, and Food Literature," (Barbara S. Hutchinson and Antoinette Paris Greider, eds.), Marcel Dekker, Inc. The chapter was co-authored by Tim McKimmie of NMSU.

Over 40 people from Maricopa, Pinal and Gila counties joined together to experience training on affirmative action and penalty mail in the Maricopa County office, Friday, September 20. Affirmative action presenters were Shirley O'Brien and Lisa Elliott (from Pinal County) and Steven Crofts presented the rules and regulations of penalty mail usage. If you would like to see the PowerPoint presentations used, you can view them at http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/employee/civilrights_files/v3_document.html (for the affirmative action overview) and http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/employee/penaltymail_files/v3_document.html (for the penalty mail overview).

On behalf of the 2002 CALS Faculty Conference Chairs, we would appreciate if ALL faculty would complete the survey on the website: http://cals.arizona.edu/employees/evaluation.html. We invite those who didn't attend the conference to fill out the questionnaire as the survey would like to use this data for future assessment on the faculty conference. Thank you for your assistance.

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is now a member of EDEN. The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) links Extension educators from across the U.S. and various disciplines so they can use and share resources to reduce the impact of disasters. From food safety to field safety, from the physical to the psychological, and from governmental process to community development, EDEN has resources you can use. See http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/eden/.

All CALS employees, as well as University neighbors, students and the general public, are cordially invited to attend the Celebration of the UA CAMPUS ARBORETUM on September 28, 2002. The festivities begin at 9:00 am on the west side of Old Main. We will honor past botanists and those who've made the UA campus what it is today. We'll have refreshments, awards, dedications, tours, and plants for sale. We'll plant a tree or two, and we'll give everyone an opportunity to share in future stewardship of the University of Arizona campus! Please join us as we celebrate the oldest continually-maintained green space in the State of Arizona.
