The results of the first Arizona
Space Grant Consortium / UA Cooperative Extension "PreCollege Mini-Grants Competition"
are in! These grants of up to $400 each were awarded to educators for innovative
science, mathematics and technology-related projects, or professional development
experiences. Of the seven awardees, three hail from our ranks. Congratulations
to: Curt Peters, for "Rocketing into Space" in partnership with Donaldson Elementary
in Tucson; Elizabeth Sparks for "4-H GPS" for students in several schools in
Tucson and South Tucson; and to Joyce Alves for "4-H Aerospace" for students
in St. John's, Round Valley and Sanders. We will be soliciting feedback from
these and the other four awarded educators (from Gilbert, Chandler, Rock Point,
north of Tsaile, and Elfrida) to refine the program for future competitions.
If you have any suggestions, please send them to Barron Orr barron@cals.arizona.edu
or Susan Brew sbrew@lpl.arizona.edu.
UA Cooperative Extension will have a week of displays at the state Capitol
in the main floor Gallery, February 24-28. Maricopa County is the lead on
this project. Please reserve your Cooperative Extension program displays
for that week. We need a good diversity of program displays to highlight
our education and impacts of each County across the state. Please put this
week of displays on your schedule. Contact your volunteers now! Please
let Stan Farlin or Darlene know by February 10, 2003 or BEFORE what display
you will have and what space is needed (i.e., only a 6 ft table, no table
or something else).
