Sarah Harman died Sunday morning, March 2 at about dawn. For those of you
who didn't have the chance to know her (or have her chaperone your 4-H
Round-up or Congress trips), Sarah Harman was the Assistant State 4-H
Leader from about 1956 until the early 80's. She helped establish the
National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA) at a National 4-H
Congress in 1956. She managed our camping and teen leadership programs as
well as worked in all FCS projects. She was a great role model and mentor
to many of us in the 4-H system. And to top it off, her role model
extended into her retirement when she began a 20 year volunteer career. She
traveled, loved camping and stayed interested in U of A sports until her
death. Congratulatory messages were given to Sarah on her induction into
the National 4-H Hall of Fame. After discussions with several others, it
was decided to continue to receive these "congratulatory" messages and give
them to the family in lieu of sympathy cards. This would truly make it a
celebration of her life which was full to the very end. Please contact your
4-H friends and former leaders who may want to contribute stories as well
and send these letters to Beryl Burt at 2568 N. Ironwood Ridge Drive,
Tucson, AZ 85745. Sarah was truly one of the great ladies of Extension and
4-H. Services are pending because her relatives live in the east.
Our condolences to Steven Crofts, his wife, Rosemarie, and their family on
the recent loss of his father-in-law, Samuel Camarena. He passed away at a
local Hospice Center on Sunday morning, March 2 from cancer. A memorial
service is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 at 3:00pm at the First Southern
Baptist Church, 445 E. Speedway.
Development Day will occur on May 1, 2003 from 10:00-2:30pm at the Maricopa
County office. Lunch will be provided. The program will focus on
developing and raising endowed funds for off campus administrative units.
Bryan Rowland, Joe Leisz, Stan Farlin and several county faculty will be on
the program. We will discuss endowments such as "naming" offices, rooms,
armadas, landscapes, county endowed "chairs", endowed volunteer funds, and
projects. Please mark your calendars. More information will be forthcoming.
The Graham County Farmer's Day 2003 was held last week. I want to thank
the Graham County Extension office for all their hard work in making this
event a success and the following presenters: Paul Brown, Randy Norton,
Bill McCloskey, Jeff Silvertooth, Tim Dennehey, and Mike Ottman. Excellent
program!
The Mohave County office will be closed Friday, March 14, 2003 for a
scheduled painting and carpeting project that makes it necessary for
faculty and staff to pack boxes, move computers and phones, and prepare for
the work crews to get started at noon. We expect to resume normal office
hours on Monday, March 17.
