Tuesday Morning Notes

May 6, 2003

Each year we provide a report on county and statewide program goals and previous years’ Accomplishments to the University of Arizona Provost’s Office. You can view this report on the web at http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/about/. Check this out if you want to see our thoughts and goals.

Discussions are complete on the County Report Card (now titled “Indicators of Success”), the new zero based budget plan, and cost recovery. We have made major changes to all these documents based on your feedback and the feedback of clientele. The final version of the new county budget plan and cost recovery is being sent today and can be found in our policy manual on the web at http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/employee/pandp/cstrcvry.pdf. The new “Indicators of Success” report will be out this Fall.

I appreciate the role of Bryan Rowland, Jim Davis, Joe Leisz and members of the UA Foundation for an insightful and stimulating program on fund development. About 40 faculty and staff attended. I would also like to thank Darlene Lyman, Steven Crofts and the Maricopa County faculty and staff for arranging the food, room and logistics. Joanne Littlefield videotaped the program and will make copies available to those who could not make it to the May 1 program. Thanks Joanne. Good program.

Congratulations to recipients of Proposition 301 (TRIF) funds. The following faculty had successful proposals: Susan Pater and Kim McReynolds (Mountain block recharge and the hydrology of caves: an interactive display), Kitt Farrell-Poe and Janick Artiola (Know your water: manual of water quality and treatment for the home owner), Paul Baker and Louis Carlo (Arizona water and pesticide CD), Paul Brown and Peter Waller (Improved turf and landscape irrigation management for northern Arizona), Ed Martin, Liz Didier, and Don Slack (Education workshops and feasiblity study for sustainable forage production on the Havasupai reservation), and Val Little (Evaluation of M & I water conservation measures through actual water savings and cost/benefit analysis).

Over 3,000 people walked Saturday, April 26, in the 5K Walk to End Domestic Violence in downtown Phoenix. Together they raised more than $110,000 to benefit local shelters. Cooperative Extension was represented by Ruth Carter, Hilary Cummings and Joanne Littlefield. It was a great opportunity for them to chat with Governor Napolitano about Extension programs. Hilary and Ruth talked to her at length about their teen interactive theater program in Phoenix high schools. Check out the photos at http://cals.arizona.edu/~rcarter/teamjanet.htm.
