Tuesday Morning Notes

May 20, 2003

Prunell Charley has resigned effective May 30. He plans to enter both the private and the non-profit sectors on the Navajo Nation. He is an accomplished horseshoer and businessman, and is making plans to apply for veterinary school as well. Prunell is a UA graduate and served as an EIRP Extension Agent on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and at the Shiprock Agency/Navajo Nation. He is widely known as a creative and passionate educator in Indian Country. We wish him and his family well.

Congratulations to Maricopa County faculty, staff, and Master Gardeners. "Desert Landscaping for Beginners" received a Glyph Award from the Arizona Book Publishing Association for "Best Gardening/Agriculture Book" published in 2001 and 2002.

The Southwest Indian Livestock Field Days and Family Festival was another success this year. The event was held at the White Mountain Apache Tribe's Hon-dah Resort and Casino last week. Many thanks to UA presenters and planners: Russ Tronstad, Bob Kattnig, Johnnie Treichel, Steve Campbell, Peder Cuneo, Joyce Alves, Esther Peterson, Mike Hauser, Jim Sprinkle, Bob Glock, Prunell Charley, Gerald Moore, Isabelle Francisco, Brenda Larry, Matt Livingston, Liz Didier, Linda Masters, Howard Jones (retired) and Joe Hiller.

Here's an excerpt from the CALS Carryover Policy (revised 6/30/03) that you should all be aware of: "...unexpended budgeted funds in your accounts at the close of the fiscal year will revert entirely to the College. And...as before, units with year-end deficits in budgeted funds will have funds withheld from their FY2004 allocations to cover the shortfall." You can find the entire policy at http://ag.arizona.edu/aas/home/YEAREND03.htm. Remember the June 1 deadline to contact CALS Admin Services, if you need to work out a carryover plan. The deadline for carryover-related paperwork to CALS Admin Services is June 15, 2003.

The 9th Annual Melon Field Day will be June 4 at the UA Maricopa Ag Center and the program is available on the ACIS website at: http://ag.arizona.edu/crops/counties/all/meetings/2003/melonfld060403.html.

The AAEA Summer Meeting and Professional Development is scheduled for June 9, 12:00-5:00pm at the Thunderbird Meeting Room in Grand Canyon Park followed by the AAEA Summer Meeting and Professional Development from 5:00-8:00pm and Cajun Cooking with our own Cajun, Pat Clay, and Park Service Staff at 9:00pm at the Campfire Ring. On June 10, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, the meetings continue with Park Service Staff In-service Programs. Lodging will be at one of the hotels within the park itself and Tom DeGomez is heading up the planning for the meeting. Hotel options that still have rooms available are: a) Maswich North ($118/night) which is within walking distance of the meeting room, b) Maswich South (at $76/night) which is farther away, c) Yavapai East and West ($102 with A/C or $90 without A/C) and they are also farther away. Participants are responsible for making their own reservations by calling 888-297-2757. If you have not already paid your AAEA dues for the year, contact Randy Norton at rnorton@ag.arizona.edu. The cost of the summer meeting cookout is $15.00 in advance or $25.00 at the meeting (with or without a spouse) and promises to be a Cajun delight thanks to Pat Clay. Contact Barry Bequette (928)726-3904 for more details.

The Arizona Extension Water Quality program is holding a one-day Strategic Planning Workshop at the Maricopa Agricultural Center on Thursday, June 12 from 8:30-4:30.
