Swing into 4-H" was the theme for the 2003 State 4-H Teen Congress held July 13-16 on the U of A campus. 119 youth and adults from 14 counties lived the college life, living at the Kaibab-Huachuca dorm, attending workshops taught by faculty, and volunteers, youth and adults, eating meals at The Cellar, and dancing! Yes, one workshop was presented by representatives from the Tucson Swing Dance Club. Hats off to Brent Strickland and Esther Peterson for serving as agent advisors for the State 4-H Teen Council who facilitated the event along with the State 4-H office personnel, Sandra Saad, Joanie Craig, Jennifer Stapp, Lisa Lauxman, and Bill Peterson; Extension personnel, Glenda Thompson, Patti Baciewicz and Steven Crofts; and 4-H Youth Foundation personnel, Joe Leisz and Carlos Sierra. Workshops were presented on various topics from entomology, basic food safety, horses, Character Counts!, Leadership Personality, GPS , Ag Decisions, Japanese Exchange, Hot Rod Tech, Citizenship Washington Focus, Topiaries, Kids and Grant Writing, Health Science Careers, Buying Your First Car, Livestock Quality Assurance, Step Up to Leadership, Leadership in Action, Teen Entrepreurship, and College Exploration. Dan Holderidege was the banquet speaker. Dan's a member of the National 4-H Leadership Trust and shared his survival experience of 9-11 at the Pentagon. Bobby Browning, Shelly McGrath, and Brian Henley encouraged the youth to pursue the U of A as a choice. Dances, bowling, and community service at ten different Tucson area agencies rounded out the youths' experiences. Yes, it was a "swinging" time at Teen Congress that provided a great way for leadership and community service in a collegiate setting for this 101st year of 4-H Youth Development.
