Tuesday Morning Notes

August 26, 2003

On the August 7 Administrative Staff/Business Officers conference call, I indicated that we would put out a draft outline for regional staff in-services to occur during the next year. We are exploring some funding sources to help in this process. The focus will be on "Creating and Enhancing A Good Workforce Environment." We will draw upon Human Resources and other resources to build a program around your issues. Plans, agendas, people and locations are being looked into.

Congratulations on the following projects, which were funded by the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program: Linda Masters, Colorado River Indian Tribe, will work with youth and adults on the uses of GPS/GIS data in resource and farm management decisions; Matt Livingston, Hopi Reservation, will work with traditional farmers on new methods of field preparation, using a V-shaped furrow, before corn planting by hand; and Liz Didier, Hualapai and Havasupai Reservations, will work with ranchers and agency personnel to develop a rangeland and livestock management plan. These projects are part of SARE's professional development program (PDP) which strives to assist Extension agents in their work with farmers, ranchers, and consumers. For more information about Arizona's program, call Rick Gibson, the Arizona PDP coordinator, or see http://ag.arizona.edu/extension/sustainableag/index.html.

A reminder that the deadline for nominations for the Extension Faculty of the Year and the Extensionist of the Year awards for 2003 next Tuesday, September 2, 2003. Faculty of the Year Award criteria and guidelines can be found at http://cals.arizona.edu/awards/extfacultyawd.html and a nomination form for the Extensionist of the Year Award is available in PDF format at http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/temp/2003_Nomination_Form.pdf.

ECAT is offering two distance classes in the fallDreamweaver Basics (9/3-10/8) and Creating and Modifying Images for a Website Using Photoshop 7 (10/16-11/6). Each class will be taught using WebCT, can be accessed through your local computer/browser, has a fee of $20 each per registrant (payable by IDB or personal check), and a time commitment for each class would be about 2 hours per week. Both classes are open to College employees, students, and volunteers, but volunteers would need to be sponsored by the appropriate department/county in order to get a University NetID to use the WebCT system. For details about each class, prerequisites and requirements, see links off the general ECAT classes page at http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/.
