Congratulations to Dawn Gouge, Extension Urban Entomologist, for her success
in the Integrated Pest Management in Schools Program. The Arizona Department
of Environmental Quality today announced the agency is beginning a pilot
project to assist five Arizona schools in developing an IPM program to
reduce student and staff exposure to pesticides. The project will expand an
ongoing program in the Kyrene School District, which has demonstrated the
effectiveness of these combinations and has also reduced costs associated
with pest management in the district. Participating school districts
include Scottsdale Unified School District, Casa Grade Elementary School
District, Mesa Unified School District and Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community.
Cotton Field Day was held October 15 at the Maricopa Ag Center. Special
thanks to Jeff Silvertooth and to all faculty that attended, Tim Dennehy and
colleagues who presented an excellent afternoon session, and all those
responsible for the bus tours.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has funded two new watershed
education programs: Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) and Master
Watershed Steward (MWS). Each is funded for three years. This meeting is to
begin the process of integrating NEMO, MWS, and Project WET to create a comprehensive
approach to watershed education for adult and youth audiences across Arizona.
You are invited to attend a watershed education planning meeting on November
20, 2003, 10am to 2pm at the Ocotillo Room at the Maricopa County Cooperative
Extension office. Please indicate if you are interested in participating by
sending an E-mail to Jeff Schalau (jschalau@ag.arizona.edu)
by November 5, 2003. We will send each participant a packet of materials that
will need to be reviewed before the meeting. Lunch will be provided. Hope to
see you there.
