Congratulations to Vickie Steinfelt, Marilynn Johnson and Evelyn Markee for receiving STEPS to a "Healthier/US" funding. This funding will allow Yuma, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties to continue and expand the Border Health Si model to reduce the burden of diabetes, obesity and asthma. Cooperative Extension is the lead agency in Yuma County and will receive $315,000 of which $225,000 will be subcontracted to other Border Health SI agencies. Santa Cruz and Cochise County Extension offices will be subcontractors in their counties and will receive $38,000 and $45,000 respectively. Faculty from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health will serve as evaluators.

GRANT PROPOSALS INVITED: The University of Arizona Water Sustainability Program is accepting proposals for year two of the competitive grants program under the Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF) also known as Prop 301 funds administered by the Arizona Board of Regents (Regents). TRIF funding to the Water Sustain ability Program is to support UA research, outreach, and education in water-related areas of importance to the state. These funds are expected to attract additional matching support from the private and public sectors. It is expected that $550,000 will be available for this grant program in FY 2004. The deadline for proposal submission is January 30th, 2004. The grants program is open only to faculty and staff at the University of Arizona. The Request for Proposals can be obtained from the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) web site, http://www.ag.arizona.edu/AZWATER/.

Two workshops will be held covering poisonous plants and livestock toxicology. One workshop will take place on December 2nd in Camp Verde, then repeated on December 3rd in Tucson. The one day workshops will cover topics such as: poisonous plants and range management, classes of toxins and their affects, other toxicities confused with poisonous plants, locoweed toxicology, strategies for dealing with toxic plants, responding to poisonous plant toxity, field sampling and preliminary diagnosis, and other elated topics. Food Stamp Nutrition & Education Program (FSNEP) held an inservice program, November 4 and 5 th at the Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort. Several interesting workshops were given by several counties EFNEP programs along with 2004 Nutrition Education Plan and Financial Reports.

CLARIFICATION: Regarding last week's notes, Tucson Pima Arts Council's Ponies del Pueblo auction, the proceeds from the 4-H Pony will go towards the Kolbe Endowment. Proceeds from the other pony (originally donated by Fonda Jordan, Master Gardner and MCA) will go to towards the Our Yard project Bone Builders and Master Consumer Advisors.

UPCOMING EVENTS: November 17, & 24 Nutritional Management: An Educational Series for Horse Owners, Sonoita. A series of three weekly, 2-½ hour sessions. A Tucson program is scheduled for January 26, February 2 & 9, 2004 and a third program is scheduled for Prescott on March 15, 22 & 29, 2004. Mark Arns and Bill Schurg also had a program on Sunday and will be conducting a program at Dine? College in the near future.
