Tuesday Morning Notes

June 29, 2004

ERE (faculty/staff benefits) has risen greatly over the past several years. The increased ERE cause real budgetary problems. The state legislative said it would pick up the new cost. The university said they would pick it up if the state did not. The bottom line is that the state passed the increase on to the University, a 12 million dollar problem. The Provost plans to pick up half the bill (6 million) and passing the other 6 million down to the colleges. This means that everyone is facing some cuts. It works out to be 2.06% of faculty and staff salaries across the University.

The Office of the President, University Advancement and Biomedical Communications are sponsoring a Campus Town Hall on Thursday, July 1, from noon until 1 p.m. in ILC 140. The topic of discussion is University budget issues. President Likins and Provost Davis will host the event. Vice President Janet Bingham will moderate. If you are unable to attend this Campus Town Hall, you can access it on your computer after the event’s conclusion. Visithttp://video.biocom.arizona.edu/video/conferevents/ and follow the appropriate link soon after the event.

We will have a CED phone teleconference on Friday, July 2 from 9:30 to 10:30 to discuss the issues. To call in dial 1-800-347-8268, press 1 when prompted,  ID 2337   PW 66639. CED’s and all county faculty and staff are encouraged to be on the call. Formal written material will be sent later in July.

The 4-H Museum at Maricopa Agricultural Center is in the final development stage.  It will be connected to the Faul Ag Village Learning Center.  The purpose of the museum will be to display articles, photos, etc. that reflect 4-H history in Arizona.  Anyone wishing to share or contribute articles or photos to the museum can contact Vic Jimenez at  vjimenez@ag.arizona.edu He will be glad to duplicate old photos and return the originals to the donor if requested. Arizona 4-H Youth Development held an inservice at Camp Verde, June 21-23 entitled “Strengthening Arizona 4-H”. This was well attended by Faculty /Staff and military partners. The in-service was not only strengthening our 4-H Youth Programs in Arizona, but also gave an opportunity for those in attendance to discuss and give input regarding issues surrounding the 4-H programing in Arizona. For more information seehttp://cals.arizona.edu/4-h/toolkit.htm . There is still time to add/change things that may assist the program to be stronger and more consistent across the state. For ideas, please contact Larry Tibbs (ltibbs@ag.arizona.edu) or Lisa Lauxman (lauxman@ag.arizona.edu). Thanks to Larry Tibbs, Lisa Lauxman, Juanita Waits, Jolie Ogg-Graybill, Bob Peterson, Darcy Tessman, and Amy Parrott for coordinating this conference.
