CSREES/ANR LEADER EXCHANGE PROGRAM:  Eric Norland, CSREES National Program leader for forestry, spent a week at the University of Arizona under the CSREES/ANR Leader Exchange program. His visit was hosted by Deborah Young. Deborah will complete the exchange in the future with a week at CSREES in Washington, D.C. during her sabbatical.

Norland’s schedule included a first-hand view of the devastating aftermath of wildfires, soil and water conservation activities, and the impact of illegal immigration transit on rangeland and livestock. He met with Dean Eugene Sander, Colin Kaltenbach and Jim Christenson. He had discussions with faculty from the Water Resources Research Center, School of Natural Resources, and the Office of Arid Lands Studies. He also visited with a county extension faculty, a local rancher representative from the Arizona State Land Department, the Summerhaven Fire Department, and Arizona-based federal staff from the Forest Service and NRCS.

The highly successful leadership exchange program between CSREES national program leaders and their agriculture and natural resources land-grant counterparts features one-week reciprocal visits with a wide range of activities that give partners the opportunity to become more familiar with each other’s organizational structures, position responsibilities, and research, extension, and education activities. University leaders interested in the exchange program should contact Dan Kugler, NRE deputy administrator (dkugler@csrees.usda.gov) or Ralph Otto, PAS deputy administrator (rotto@csrees.usda.gov)
