Tuesday Morning Notes

August 3, 2004

Congratulations to Jessica Sanchez-Jackson, Maricopa Instructional Specialist, FCS for being selected as Western Region Finalist in the Para-Professional Award category of the 2004 NEAFCS National Awards Program. The NEAFCS Awards Program provides recognition for member in the areas of professional development, communications, program development and public relation. This year more than 550 award applications were submitted.

Special thanks to the faculty, staff and dozens of Graham/Greenlee 4-H volunteers who helped move people and supplies and prepare food for the 4-H International Exchange Program Camp that took place this weekend. Ninety youth and adults took part in the program. The finale for the group was a field trip to Bylas where the Crown Dancers did a presentation for the group and everyone made fry bread.

The team of Susan Pater, Kim McReynolds, George Ruyle, Larry Howery and Mike Schneider have been awarded the “National Commutator, Team Award for Educational Piece” by the National Association of 4-H Extension Agents. The team developed a CD-Rom to address the issues of public land management and diversity– two controversial issues that often are discussed on an emotional level, rather than science based. The team understood that if these issues are to be resolved in the near future, it is important for youth and adults to have an interest and awareness in these issues. One thousand copies were initially pressed. In 2003, the Arizona Game & Fish Department pressed an additional 9,000 copies for use with their educational programs, as well as distributing them at the AZ Science Teachers Association meetings. For more information on this program, contact Susan Pater (spater@ag.arizona.edu).

The Take Charge America Institute for Consumer Financial Education and Research Financial Fitness Academy will be held on September 23 at the Fiesta Inn in Tempe. TCAI has some funding for cost recovery for Extension and the details are included on the flyer.  Participants should register with their own credit card and not use their UA p-card. For more information contact, Linda Block (lblock@ag.arizona.edu / http://cals.arizona.edu/fcs/tcai ).

“Safe Food 2010–Food Safety From the Field to the Table” was the theme of this year’s food safety conference held in Phoenix, July 27-28.  Presenters included Dr. Cuneo, Dr. Gerba, Dr. Marchello and Randy Ryan from the College of Ag. Many thanks to Sharon Hoelscher Day and Pat Clay from the Maricopa Extension office who helped to organize this successful conference which was well attended.

The newest creation that will be included at the MAC Farm Faul Ag-Village Learning Center is a 4-H Museum.  It's a great opportunity to share a little bit about Arizona's 4-H history as well as look into its future.  Extension agents, 4-H leaders, volunteers, and youth that have memorabilia they would like to see included (temporary or permanent) at the museum, should contact Victor Jimenez (vjimenez@ag.arizona.edu / 520-568-2273).  All are welcome to be a part of this great 4-H experience.

Classes which will be given this fall by ECAT related to web site creation and web software (Dreamweaver and Fireworks) are listed in the class listing, referenced below. The demonstrations are free, but the two multi-week distance classes have a $50 fee. For more information see http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/ or contact Linda folliott (ffolinda@ag.arizona.edu).
