CALS Staff In-Service 2004 will be held in Tucson on the UA Campus, November 9-10.  As a part of the Extension Staff Awards Banquet (to be held the evening of November 9), three Extension Staff of the Year awards will be given for 2002, 2003 and 2004.  As you can see we have not met as often as we should and we want to make up for lost time. My thanks to Monica Pastor and Pam Justice for all their work in partnership with the Farm Bureau in putting on the “Women in Agriculture” conference this past week. It was excellent.

Congratulations to Monica Pastor, Extension Agent 4-H Youth Development, Maricopa County was awarded the National Communicator Award-Educational Piece by the National Association of 4-H Extension Agents. Monica coordinated the writing, development, production and the distribution of the Arizona Specialty Crop lessons. The purpose of the lessons is to promote knowledge and awareness of Arizona’s specialty crop industry as well as develop recognition of the Arizona Grown logo. The lessons are currently being distributed to K-12 classroom teachers through workshops and visits. Congratulations to all who help work on the Cooperative Extension website. Congratulations to Jorge Fonseca, Assistant Professor, Vegetable/Postharvest Specialist,Yuma Ag. Center for receiving a national award for 2004 Young Scientist Award of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America. He presented two works entitled, “Effect of Cytokinins on Yield of Iceberg Lettuce and Parthenolide and Abscisic acid synthesis in feverfew are connected”which were considered in the award selection process.

Congratulations to Lynne Borden, Associate Specialist FCS  and Bill Peterson, Associate Director 4-H Youth Development who have been appointed to chair the Governor’s Task Force on Youth Development.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

August 26 - Rangeland Monitoring Workshop will be held at the new Prescott fairgrounds. For more reservations contact Jeff Schalau at 928-445-6590. This workshop is the same workshop that will be held in Gila County.

August 27 - Rangeland Monitoring Workshop will be held at the Besh Ba Gowah Museum conference room from 8-3:30pm. Lunch will be provided by Gila County Cowbelles, at no charge. This is being sponsored by the Gila County Board of Supervisors. To reserve your place contact Susan Bolt 928-474-4160 by August 25.

August 28 - V Bar V will host annual Ranch Explorer's Field Day at Mahan Park, near Happy Jack. The registration deadline is August 14. Cost is $15 for adults and $8 for all students.
