Welcome to Tauhidur Rahman, new assistant specialist in the department of
Agricultural and Resource Economics. Tauhidur comes to Arizona from
Washington State University where he received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and
Resource Economics with a specialization in Econometrics and Development
Economics. Dr. Rahman's research interests include welfare economics,
health and environmental economics, and development economics. Much of his
research has focused on the measurement of human well-being, the quality of
life, health status, and human development.
Our condolences to John Begeman and his family for the recent loss of
John's father, Paul. Before John's father retired, he had a long career
with Extension as an agent and a county director in Indiana.

Blood Pressure Body Composition Cardio Respiratory Endurance-Step Test
Nutrition, Fitness and Stress Resiliency Consultation Follow-up Testing,
and Consultation (at this time, only one cholesterol screening will be
provided every two years for benefits-eligible employees unless the
employee has been identified in a previous screening as needing a follow-up
test). Screenings take approximately 45 minutes and most employees find

Participants from Cooperative Extension at the Governor's Extra Learning
Opportunities Summit on August 20, 2004 on the ASU West campus included
summit steering committee members Lynne Borden, Bill Peterson and Amy
Adamcin (4-H member), Lisa Lauxman, Brent Strickland, Debbie May, Darcy
Tessman, Ruth Carter, Monica Pastor, Juanita Campo-Waits, Marlena Parrott
and Amy Parrott. The purpose of the summit was to facilitate conversations
around positive youth development and generate support for these efforts in
Arizona. The key note speaker was Heather Weiss from the Harvard Family
Research Project. Recommendations were generated from discussion groups
and will be given to Governor Napolitano.
UA Library Staff will present a poster session and provide online
demonstrations, at the 2004 CALS Faculty Conference, for the following
services: 1) Document Delivery - provides remote delivery of materials
owned by the UA Library to faculty, staff, and students; 2) Interlibrary
Loan - provides access to materials not owned by the UA Library; 3)
Reference Service - learn how to navigate the catalog and search databases
specific to your needs; 4) Alert Services - email notifications of new
articles; and 5) Refworks software - free software that will organize in a
database all your citations. The state Extension office will work with
you to help cover up-front costs of document delivery. Faculty are
expected to provide reimbursement or put costs on P-Cards.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
September 17 - The Arizona Pecan Growers Association will hold its annual
meeting and educational program at the Palo Verde Holiday Inn in Tucson.
The focus of the educational program will be pecan aphid management, fruit
thinning, the new pecan crop insurance program, weed control, and industry
global issues such as health and marketing. For more information, contact

September 18 - A conference entitled "Relatives Raising Children,"
sponsored by Kinship Kare of Northern Arizona, will be held at Coconino
Community College, Flagstaff from 8:45-3:45. This is for grandparents and

October 6 - 2004 MAC Field Day, Maricopa Agricultural Center. As in past
years, there is again a call for posters for the poster session. The poster
session is a unique opportunity for extensionists, researchers and
companies to showcase their programs, projects and products. This year the
session will take place under the covered parking area on the South side of
the building. Tables (3x8) will be available as well as poster boards
(4x8). Electricity is available for those who need it. For more
