Tuesday Morning Notes

September 21, 2004

Dr. Michael Crimmins will join the faculty in January 2005 as the Assistant Extension Specialist in Climate Science. This is a new area of operation for the SWES Department, but that offers a tremendous degree of opportunity both in the short and long term range of development. Michael's program in Climate Science will provide an opportunity to interact with SWES faculty as well as other faculty in CALS. Very importantly, Michael will have the opportunity to develop a program that is truly interdisciplinary and will by it's very nature be interacting with many different programs across campus and other agencies in our region.

The annual meeting of the Arizona Pecan Growers Association took place last Friday in Tucson.  My special thanks to Michael Kilby, Extension Professor Emeritus, for his continuing leadership.  Also, thanks to FICO, Fertizona and other groups for their support. Jim Walworth, Rick Gibson, Bill McCloskey, and Ryan Rector, graduate assistant, gave talks.  Over 60 attended, many from New Mexico.

Next week we'll be announcing the official Call for Proposals for the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) James P. & Shirley J. O'Brien Endowment Award.  These awards are intended to further the mission that Shirley O'Brien believed in and fulfilled in her 27 years at the University of Arizona, that is, "a passion for diversity in people, programs and ideas" - particularly, "the awareness of diversity, respect for the richness of diversity that exists in CALS Cooperative Extension, and the belief that diversity brings quality to CALS Cooperative Extension."  Details for proposal submission will be included at that time.
