Tuesday Morning Notes

May 3, 2005

Due to the limited number of county faculty in family and consumer sciences, the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension will no longer participate in the high school financial planning program sponsored by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE). We plan to continue our involvement in financial management through the Take Charge America Institute as well as other new programs.

The webcasting presentation for the Pinal County Assistant/Associate Agent, 4-H Youth Development was held Monday, May 2. This may be viewed at http://ag.arizona.edu/extension/webcasts .

The webcasting presentation for the Yuma County Associate/Full Extension Agent Agriculture will be Wednesday, May 4. The title of the webcast is "Describe the Process You Would Implement to Plan an Extension Program for Yuma County Agricultural Growers" and can be viewed at www.cals.arizona.edu/extension/webcasts.html Candidates and times are: J. Jefferson Gwyn, 11:00-11:45am; Kurt Nolte, 2:15-3:00pm. For more information, contact Glenda Thompson (520-621-3621 or tglenda@ag.arizona.edu).

The annual spring awards and recognition reception and banquet was held Friday, April 29. Two awards were presented for the Extensionist of the Year to Cheryl Goar and Bas Aja. Although we commonly associate the Extensionist of the Year award with a volunteer who has contributed their time and effort to a particular Extension program area, Cheryl and Bas have made significant contributions to Cooperative Extension as a whole. As Executive Director of their respective commodity group, Bas with the Arizona Cattle Industry and Cheryl with the Arizona Nursery Association, they have lobbied the State Legislature for critical funding for College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Cooperative Extension. Cheryl and Bas are graduates of the Center for Rural Leadership (CENTRL), active alumni, and serve on our Board of Directors. Both are highly visible and credible advocates for Arizona's diverse Ag industry with our State Legislators. Cheryl and Bas have regularly shared their expertise in a variety of AZ Cooperative Extension conferences and outreach educational programs. Both have volunteered their talents to serve 4-H and FFA youth in Arizona.

Dean Fish will be presented the Achievement Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents at their Annual Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference in Buffalo, New York later this summer. The Achievement Award is presented to individuals who have shown meritorious success in their program efforts during the first ten years of their career.

Congratulations to Tom DeGomez for being a National Finalist in the National Association of County Agricultural Agents Communications Awards Program in Category 11- Publication, for his entry, "Beyond the Ponderosa." Also, congratulations to Chris Jones and Jeff Schalau as Regional Finalists in Category 9 - Video/TV Presentation, "Protecting Your Home and Property From Wildfires."

A reception will be held at the U of A Water Resources Research Center, May 10 at 4:45pm for Bonnie Colby to celebrate her new book that was coauthored with John E. Thorson and Sarah Britton, "Negotiating Tribal Water Rights, Fulfilling Promises in the Arid West," hosted by WRRC and the UA Center for Sustainability of Arid and Semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas (SAHRA). The book offers an introduction to the ongoing challenges tribal claims present to western water management. It discusses the innovative approaches that states, tribes and the federal government have taken to fulfill claims while mitigating harm to both non-Indians and the environment.
