Tuesday Morning Notes

February 21, 2006

The Western 4-H Institute had 81 people registered for the 2006 Institute in Las Vegas February 6-10. Lani Hall, Melvina Adolf and Cathy Martinez were participants and Brent Strickland was on the planning team. The program was based on the 4-H PRKC, and reports are that the presenters were well prepared and relevant and the enthusiasm was high. It was evident that the Western region is committed to the professional growth and learning of 4-H colleagues in the West.

The webcasting presentation for the Hualapai Nation/Havasupai Tribe/Mohave County Assistant/Associate Agent, Agriculture & Natural Resources.4-H Youth Development seminar presentation and webcasts will be this Thursday, February 23. The title of the webcast is “What Does Extension Mean to the Hualapai Nation” and can be viewed at: www.cals.arizona.edu/extension/webcasts.html. Candidates are Elayne Hovde (8:30-9:15am) and Jonathan W. Long (10:30-11:15am). For more information, contact Glenda Thompson (520-621-3621).

As reported in the February 7 issues of Tuesday Morning Notes, there is a revised version of the Extension Faculty/Staff Roster (2/6/06) available at http://ag.arizona.edu/extension/directory/20060206Roster.pdf. In addition, the website version now has a slightly different look with a larger font size for easier reading. What you don’t see is that each time you submit changes and we correct our roster database, those changes will be immediately reflected on the website version. I would like to thank both Robert Armstrong and Steven Crofts for working on the upgrades.

The workshop will be designed and conducted by organizational consultants from the University of Arizona Human Resources Department. This interactive workshop will focus on four main management themes: 1) Building Personal Effectiveness as a Manager (which will include a self assessment of your management style, discussion on the importance of a positive work environment and reflection on the impact effective management has on staff morale and quality work); 2) Management Do’s and Don’ts (which will provide an overview of the regulations involved in the hiring and disciplinary process); 3) Enhancing Communication Skills (which will focus on developing and enhancing positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, and advisory committees) and 4) Putting It All Together--Delegating, Monitoring and Evaluating Projects and People (which will address effective management techniques in project delegation, monitoring of progress and evaluation of results). The workshop will begin at 10:00 am on March 29 and conclude at 3:00 pm on the 30. Snacks and lunches will be provided on both days. Registration fee is $25 for ALL participants and you can register online at http://cals.arizona.edu/exact/careerdev/. Registration deadline is March 3. Lodging will be covered for faculty based outside of Maricopa County who are willing to share a room with another faculty member. Since only a limited number of rooms are reserved and within the budget, to ensure your room cost is covered, you are encouraged to register early. Extension staff are welcome and encouraged to attend; however, due to a limited budget, your respective offices will need to cover expenses, including lodging. If you have questions, please contact Brent Strickland.
