FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Congratulations to Cathy Martinez , Kurt Nolte , and Melvina Adolf for being chosen as interns in the Western Extension Leadership Development Program. This is a two-year program designed for Cooperative Extension faculty, agents, advisors, educators, and specialists in the Western United States and territories.

The State Farm Bureau selected Rob Grumbles to receive their Environmental Award this year.   Congratulations, Rob.

Congratulations to Bob Kattnig and Peder Cuneo on their first national conference on livestock emergency response. An excellent panel of speakers addressed bioterrorism, foreign animal diseases, and how to respond. Participants included Arizona Department of Agriculture livestock inspectors, county health departments, veterinarians and Extension faculty from five states.  The ALIRT (Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team) is a partnership between the UA Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, the State Veterinarian's Office and the Arizona Cattle Growers Association.  It uses a network of veterinarians, livestock specialists, Cooperative Extension, and Arizona Department of Agriculture livestock officers as early responders for large animal health issues.

Kinship Kare of Northern Arizona (KKONA) was a model for an award winning entry to the Korber Foundations Transatlantic Idea Contest USable in Germany.  The actual idea was submitted by Michael Seberich, a consultant at the Bertelsmann Foundation, who received one of the 50 prizes in this years round for submitting the idea that stands behind KKONA (which will be featured as part of a magazine article in Idea Archives.  Congratulations to KKONA and Beth Tucker for this recognition.

HUMAN SUBJECTS TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

In May 2006, the Human Subjects Protection Program announced the University's adoption of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects as the designated online method for compliance with human subjects training requirements. This is a reminder that all individuals involved in human subjects research must be re-certified via the CITI course by January 1, 2007 .  Effective on that same date, Verification of Human Subjects Training Forms submitted for new projects, continuing review of existing projects, or personnel changes, may not contain training dates more than two years old.  CITI is a modular-based, on-line system that is customized to meet the needs of both Behavioral and Biomedical researchers. To access the system, log onto www.citiprogram.org and register with a user name and a password of your choosing.  You can log on as many times as needed to review all of the required modules and take the quizzes and can complete the training a little at a time, or all at once. This program also allows for collaborators, not affiliated with the University of Arizona, to take the training on-line so they can be part of your research team.  If you have any questions related to the CITI course or the deadline, contact Rebecca Dahl , Director, Human Subjects Protection Program (520.626.5925).

BREEZE TRAINING SESSIONS:

Several training sessions for the Breeze system are still available and are designed to help everyone use the Breeze system for meetings and other communication needs.  Our goal is to have at least one person from each office that understands Breeze and can assist others in their office.and several county units still need to sign up.  All sessions will be limited to 8 people.   Participant sessions will cover how to enter a meeting, use of a microphone/camera, use of chat, and general meeting room etiquette.  Host sessions will cover setting up a meeting, uploading content, and managing the meeting.  We strongly encourage you to attend a participant session prior to attending a host session.  Session length will vary depending upon questions, but plan on at least an hour for the participant session and 1 hours for host sessions.  It is important that you review the Quick Instructions on Using Breeze for Participating in a Meeting prior to attending the Participant Session and the Breeze Host Instructions prior to attending the Host Session.

To sign up for a session, go to http://cals.arizona.edu/registration/acebreeze/ .  Available session dates and times are:  December 12 (TODAY) 10am (participant) & 2pm (participant); December 13 - 2pm (host); January 17 - 10am (participant) & 2pm (participant); January 18 - 10am (participant) & 2pm  (host); January 23 - 10am (participant) & 2pm (host).

COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP:

The Professional Development Working Group is planning a communications workshop for extension faculty in late March in the Phoenix area.  In order to plan for the most effective workshop, a short survey has been developed regarding preferred topics for the two days.  This quick survey has only two questions; both require that choices be ranked in order of preference.  Go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=437202979687 to complete the survey.  The deadline for the survey to be completed is December 20 .  If you have any questions, please contact workshop co-chairs Monica Pastor or Curt Peters .
