Tuesday Morning Notes

May 1, 2007

IN MEMORY OF:

Robert "Bob" Kneebone
was laid to rest in Tucson after services held at Evergreen Mortuary on April 24.  He  was responsible for all the turfgrass teaching, research and extension for 19 years at the UA before retiring in 1985.  He taught over 300 students, was an author in over 100 scientific papers, developed "Texoka" seeded buffalograss and the golf greens cultivar (named SR 1020), was a member of the Legume Germplasm project after he retired, and received numerous service awards during and after his formal career for his research productivity and overall contributions to turfgrass science.  Our condolences to his family.

Tom Stubblefield , Professor Emeritus, was 85 years old when he died April 25, 2007.  Prof. Stubblefield joined the Department of Agricultural Economics in 1951, became assistant professor in 1957, and retired as full professor emeritus in 1983.  His daughter, Ellen, invites the department to attend grave side services on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, 10:00am, South Lawn Cemetery, 5401 S. Park Avenue, Tucson.  She said her father wanted a simple service no flowers; just friends in attendance.  If you want to contact Ellen, you can reach her at 602.265.1038.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION:

- County Extension Directors are the point of contact for Volunteer Background Screening and were sent all relevant information on April 13.  If you have any questions on this process, check with them.  Information on the process has also been incorporated into the Program & Procedural Manual, Section 3.05.02 Master Volunteer Policies.  We are still working through this process and I am sure we will experience some glitches.  Let us know how we can streamline, improve and modify this process by contacting Lisa Lauxman or Jim Christenson.

- On Friday, April 27, the 2007 Volunteer Service Awards recipients were recognized by the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism.  The Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism established these awards in 2002 to honor Arizonans who give their time and talents back to their communities.  Winners like Jason Sanchez of Prescott, who helped start a youth-run business that recycles used computers; or the STAR School in Flagstaff, whose students started an Elder Help Project to reunite generations and establish mentoring relationships with senior citizens, are making a difference throughout our state.  According to a national report, Arizonans contribute 158.6 million hours of volunteer service each year valued at over $2.8 billion.  However, despite those staggering figures, hundreds of volunteer opportunities go unfilled each month.  If every person in Arizona volunteered just one hour a week, imagine what we could do.  For more information, contact Bob Shogren, executive director of the Governor's Commission on Service & Volunteerism.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES:

There are two opportunities for funding this year--working groups and statewide initiatives.  All requests for funding are due to Extension Programs by 5:00pm on May 25 .   All proposals will be submitted on line and are required to have a county and campus or experiment station collaboration.  Funding is available from July 1, 2007June 30, 2008.  Final decisions will be made by Extension Administration.  If your team received funding last year and is resubmitting, your proposal will not be considered if you do not include the report of accomplishments.  All requests for funding will use the logic model.   If you have any questions about this model, consult http://cals.arizona.edu/extension/pda/logicmodel/ or Sheila Merrigan (520.626.6543).  To submit a proposal, go to http://cals-cf.calsnet.arizona.edu/exact/proposals and enter the username (cals) and password (ua) to access the page.  The criteria can be found at http://ag.arizona.edu/internal/programs/statefundingcriteria2007.pdf using a different username (coa) and password (ua).  For questions about funding requests, contact Patti B. (520.621.5308).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Cooperative Extension Administration supports professional development opportunities for all appointed personnel with Extension appointments.  Faculty can submit for funds up to $750.  All requests must be submitted in writing in advance .  Effective July 1, 2004, faculty must include with submission a three to five-year professional development career plan with yearly updated goals and plans of action. Basically, we want you to think about where you are today, where you want to be in 5 years and what professional development will help you.  For discussion of the competencies needed for Cooperative Extension faculty, go to the professional development website or check out the new policy.  If you have any questions, contact Lisa Lauxman (520.621.7205).

NEW UA PHOTO USE GUIDELINES:

The University's UAWeb Team, through discussion with the Attorney's Office, has come up with guidelines for using people's photos, as in news photos, promotional photos, and webcams.  It addresses student images, employee images, and student employee images, and includes comments about both print and web and has a link for a UA model release form.  We have linked to these new guidelines which can be found at
http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/web/peoplephotos.html.
