- Late last week I received the okay from the Provost and Dean to proceed with the position search for the Assistant Director, 4-H Youth Development position.  Steve Husman will chair the search committee.

- As of July 2, Jim Sprinkle is now the CED Chair (taking over from Dean Fish).

USING THE COOPERATIVE EXTENSION LOGO:

As the largest outreach organization in the state, Arizona Cooperative Extension reaches more than 200,000 residents.  Thousands of university messages letters, business cards, publications or Web sites are downloaded, mailed or presented throughout the state every day from county and campus units.  It is important that these messages project a coherent, immediately identifiable look and feel that is consistent with the quality of our institution.  The marketing tools the "block A, letterheads, Web site graphics, and more reflect the university's history and its dynamic future. Consistent use of the elements contained within these guidelines is an important way to enhance the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension reputation. I encourage the entire Extension community to adopt and use them with pride and enthusiasm.

Two years ago we sent all county units a CD with the new logo and letterhead templates. However, its usage is not always consistent or even remembered, so this is a reminder that we have specific Extension and UA guidelines on the use of our logo.  Please refer to the Graphic Element Guides for In-Office Printing which is both online and on the CD that was distributed in June 2005.  It is also recommended that the logo and letterhead templates be loaded onto both on- and off-campus Extension faculty computers (including appropriate support staff), so that it is easily accessed.  This information should be available to all Extension faculty and staff for use in newsletters, publications, marketing materials, correspondence and other similar items. If you have any questions regarding the use of logos, contact Steven Crofts (for Extension) or Robert Casler (for College or University).

CSREES COMPETITIVE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES GRANTSMANSHIP WORKSHOP:

The American Society for Horticulture Science (ASHS) and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) will host a Grantsmanship Workshop for competitive funding opportunities at the ASHS Annual Meeting in Scottsdale.  The workshop will be held on-site at the Westin Kierland Resort on Wednesday, July 18 . The workshop will feature agency staff providing information about the available competitive funding opportunities, the peer review process, and tips for success.  Additionally, successful awardees from the Small Business Research Innovation Program (SBIR) and the National Research Initiative (NRI) will share their experiences in developing, writing, and implementing a successful project.  Faculty in research, extension, and academics are encouraged to attend.  For additional details and registration information, visit http://www.ashs.org/conferences.html.

A new CALS publication that has been posted:  Principles of Obtaining and Interpreting Utilization Data on Rangelands by Lamar Smith , George Ruyle , Jim Maynard, Steve Barker, Walt Meyer , Dave Stewart, Bill Coulloudon, Stephen Williams, and Judith Dyess.

ONLINE COURSE DELIVERY PRESENTATION:

In March 2007, Linda Ffolliott gave a short presentation to selected Extension faculty and staff attending the Communications Workshops in Phoenix.  Because there were people unable to attend the session, she has made a slight variation of this presentation using PowerPoint with voice and posted it as a Flash video.  The video runs 17 minutes and briefly talks about the tools available through the University that can be used for online course delivery:  D2L, Moodle, Breeze, a password protected folder on CALS, listservs, blogs, and podcasts. This presentation is found at http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/web/videos/onlineinstruction.html.
