STAFF IN-SERVICE:
Last week the 2007 CALS & Extension Staff In-Service took place at the Tanque Verde Ranch and the Tucson Hilton East. The settings, speakers and food were all highly commended based on the evaluations that have been turned in so far (that show a preliminary rating average of 4.6+) and the planning teams for both days did an excellent job of putting it all together. One of the key comments that compliment the planning teams was the planning crew goes above and beyond to make sure the staff are taken care of in every way. The second day of in-service ended with an awards luncheon that honored Marlena Parrott (Instructional Specialist, Senior, Yuma County) as this years 2007 Extension Staff Person of the Year . Congratulations, Marlena! Pictures from the entire event will be put up on a passworded, temporary Web site at a future date that will be announced.
NEW PUBLICATIONS:
There is a new CALS publication that has been posted: Arizona: Know Your Water (Spanish) [Conoces tu Agua Arizona?] by Janick Artiola , Jacqueline Moxley , Kitt Farrell-Poe . It is available for sale at http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/.
TRAINING DEMO:
On October 23 , from 9:00-11:30, Linda Ffolliott (ECAT Webmaster) will present a demo on how to create 2- and 3-column layouts using style sheet rules (as opposed to use a table structure). This presentation is available face-to-face in Forbes 124 or through a Breeze Internet connection if you are off-campus. The demonstration will include how to have different looks for links on different parts of your web page and information about a fluid layout versus a fixed layout. For more details and a link to the registration form, go to http://cals.arizona.edu/ecat/classes/.
UPCOMING EVENTS & DEADLINES:
- The Annual Arizona Nursery Association (ANA) EXPO will be November 8 at the UOP Stadium. ANA sent invitations to many of the UA departments and programs to have a booth at the EXPO. Kai Umeda, ANR/Turfgrass Agent, Maricopa County) has proposed to ANA to have a designated area that will be an "island" or "row" of all UA exhibits/booths. This will show the industry that the UA is one unified entity instead of a bunch of individual programs and/or departments with varying names that confuse the clientele and the public in general. Kai is willing to work with ANA to coordinate all requests. Contact Kai (602.470.8086, ext. 314) with any questions and/or requests.
- A riparian workshop, The Dynamic Nature and Natural Diversity of Riparian Areas , will be held at The Lodge at Cliff Castle in Camp Verde from Thursday, November 8 at 10:00am through Friday, November 9 at 11:30am. The workshop is intended to give participants an understanding on what factors drive riparian areas to remain static or change through time, how riparian areas differ and how they can be classified. Speakers include riparian, watershed and hydrology specialists from the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Arizona State University, U.S. Geologic Survey, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Pacific Southwest Research Station, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Natural Resources Conservation Service, The Nature Conservancy, and a private consultant and rancher. The workshop is sponsored by the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. A workshop fee of $40 includes lunch and handouts and the registration deadline is October 30 . For an agenda and registration information, contact George Zaimes (520.621.9389).
