March 10, 2009

MARLEY FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTION:

We are pleased to announce that Project CENTRL received a $150,000 contribution from The Marley Foundation. These funds will be used in support of the next class and help Project CENTRL get through the next two years.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Congratulations to Trent Teegerstrom who received the Henry and Phyllis Koffler Prize for his work in public service and outreach. This is one of the highest awards given by the University.

Congratulations to Erin Taylor, Assistant Field Crops Agent, in Maricopa County for her Chairmanship of an extremely successful Arizona Ag Day this past Saturday, March 7. Preliminary estimates are that 3,000 people participated in the $1 lunch and viewed the educational exhibits. The Stechnij family opened their Superstition Farm dairy for the event. Chef James Porter from Tapino's Kitchen and Wine Bar utilized Scottsdale culinary arts students to prepare and serve the meal. Erin had committee help from Gerry Parker, Amy Nugent and Kristen Wagner who are all Program Coordinators in the Maricopa office. This event is planned by a committee comprised of representatives from the various agricultural organizations, businesses and government agencies that serve the agricultural industry.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION STAKEHOLDER SURVEY – Good News & Request for Assistance:

Good news, about 240 people have completed the "Cooperative Extension Stakeholder Survey". This means we are about halfway to our goal of a minimum of 500 responses to the Survey. Thank you to everyone who completed the Survey and/or distributed the Survey to your key stakeholders/clientele. If you have not done so, please take a few minutes before the end of this week and visit the Stakeholder Survey Web Site (www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Z_2bBY8H3Uoc2fJuKyOeRXHQ_3d_3d) and complete a survey and contact your key stakeholders/clientele and request that they complete the Survey. Both Colin Kaltenbach and our Cooperative Extension Administrative team need this type of feedback for our Federal USDA report. If you have questions or would like additional information, contact Ed Martin (edmartin@cals.arizona.edu, 520.621.5308), Linda Houtkooper (houtkoop@cals.arizona.edu, 520.621.5308) or Kirk Astroth (kastroth@cals.arizona.edu, 520.621.5316).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

What is Creative Commons? Why might you, as an Extension professional, need it? How do you use it? This presentation helps take the mystery out of Creative Commons. When creating PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets and peer reviewed publications, we are often users of photos, YouTube videos and other files. We may search online for materials that we want to use. We need to understand Creative Commons, Public Domain and All Rights Reserved so that we can know which things we can use, which things we can use and change, and which things we can only use the same way the owner has designated it to be used. This eXtension presentation, in partnership with the ACE Information Technology SIG, is presented by Anne Adrian, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and Deb Coates, Iowa State University Extension. Go to connect.extension.iastate.edu/p57617465/ to view the presentation (approximately 40 minutes).
