Tuesday Morning Notes

April 21, 2009

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Congratulations to Al Fournier, Peter Ellsworth and the entire IPM Coordinating Committee for receiving an honorable mention for the Western Extension Directors Association's Award of Excellence for their work on IPM programming in Arizona. There were over 15 applications for the award this year and although the distinction of honorable mention is optional, the Awards Committee believed that the IPM program was indeed impressive and deserving of recognition.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Program of Pima County was selected to receive the Heart in Hand Award on May 14 in Phoenix at the Arizona Community Action Association Conference for providing a vital service in the Tucson community. The program was selected by Pima County Action Agency for the services provided to grandparents who are raising grandchildren by providing a resource manual in English and Spanish, Web site (cals.arizona.edu/grandparents), and outreach programs for the children being raised by their grandparents. The team includes Maureen Milazzo, Brigid Maloney, Daniel McDonald, Cynthia Flynn and Linda Block. Congratulations to all those involved.

The ace_water listserv is a communication tool primarily for persons interested in water quality issues and discussion in Extension and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It replaces two former listservs (extension-wq and extwater). This email list is a way for subscribers to communicate with each other; send notices about special classes, events, and workshops; and talk about issues and resources. Although this listserv is an open listing, most of the information will revolve around integrating Extension, education/instruction, and research, with emphasis on Extension activities and concerns. To subscribe to the list, email Kitt Farrell-Poe (kittfp@cals.arizona.edu).

PLANT MANAGEMENT NETWORK:

The Plant Management Network (plantmanagementnetwork.org/about/) (PMN) is a not-for-profit, online publishing effort whose mission is to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops. PMN achieves this mission by developing science-based resources that help researchers, crop management professionals, consultants, growers, educators, and students make better plant management decisions and recommendations. The College and Plant Sciences are renewing their commitment to provide this network to our faculty. I would like to have those faculty that use this system to email me concerning their appraisal of this information source.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

A reminder that the 13th Annual Retiree's BBQ will be combining with the Retiree's Reception for a joint event on Saturday, April 25 at a new location -- the First United Methodist Church (915 E. Fourth Street - corner of Fourth & Park). Parking is available on the west side of the church and at the Tyndall Garage. If you plan to attend, RSVP to Sharon Wise (swise@cals.arizona.edu, 520.621.7190).

"Unquenchable: Americas Water Crisis and What To Do About It," brown bag presentation and book signing, Friday, May 1, Sol Resnick Conference Room, Water Resources Research Center, 350 N. Campbell Ave. Robert Glennon captures the irony--and tragedy--of America's water crisis in a book that is both frightening and wickedly comical. From manufactured snow for tourists in Atlanta to trillions of gallons of water flushed down the toilet each year, "Unquenchable" reveals the heady extravagances and everyday inefficiencies that are sucking the nation dry.
