What can you do with an undergraduate major in Family and Consumer Sciences? This major gives you two career options:
CERTIFICATION AS A CLASSROOM FACS TEACHER (education track) - Family and Consumer Science teachers are also called Life Skills or Career and Technology Education teachers. Their goal is to help adolescents (grades 7-12) improve their quality of life and productivity as individuals, family members, and wage earners. Teaching Family and Consumer Sciences is an exciting, rewarding, and challenging career because it touches the heart and mind of both teachers and students. Job opportunities for Family and Consumer Sciences teachers are many. Due to expanding programs and anticipated retirements, the current teacher shortage is expected to continue. To become a FACS teacher one must love people, especially adolescents. You must be dedicated and committed to your work, because you will be helping young people become successful, responsible, healthy, and independent individuals. Click here for more information about FACS education certification.
CERTIFICATION AS A FAMILY LIFE EDUCATOR (FLE track) - The FACS major prepares students for entry-level positions as Family Life Educators. Family Life Educators are professionals who provide non-formal (e.g., workshop) education in government, health-based, or community-based agencies (e.g., Parents Anonymous, Child Welfare Departments, Planned Parenthood, HMOs, church-based organizations). Their goal is to facilitate skill development and knowledge by providing information about how families work; the interrelationship of families and society; human development throughout the life span; the physiological and psychological aspects of human sexuality; the impact of money and time management on daily family life; and the importance and value of parent education. Family Life Educators must have the ability to teach and/or develop curriculum for what are often sensitive and personal issues. Click here for more information about FLE certification.
