Scholarly Interests and Activities
My current research interests focus on the role of close relationships in children's early school adjustment and development of Social and Emotional competence. I am particularly interested in whether supportive relationships with classroom teachers and school peers may compensate for child and/or family risk factors in predicting favorable child outcomes in school.
The Head Start Child Resilience Project involved a prospective, longitudinal study of the influences of parental involvement, teacher-child and peer relationships on low-income children's social adjustment in preschool and at the transition to kindergarten.
Most recently I have been collaborating with Drs. Wendy Gamble and Donna Christensen on the Parenting and Children's Emotion Project. This longitudinal study examines the associations among family emotional climate, parental socialization practices, child emotional competence, and
the development of aggressive behaviors during the preschool period. The research is designed to explore parental goals and strategies for teaching about emotions in low-income, Mexican-American and Anglo families. We are particularly interested in the role of fathers in the socialization of emotional competence in young children.
