Project WET en español and Monitoring
on the lake
I was invited to participate in providing teacher training classes at
the Universidad para Todos program. Armed with the Project WET (Water
Education for Teachers) curriculum in Spanish that Kerry Schwartz gave
me before leaving, I provided hands-on water education activities to
local teachers on two occasions. Each class was attended by over 45
participants each, most of whom were women of Mayan descent.
Another exciting day was spent monitoring water quality and collecting
samples with the Lake Atitlan Sustainable Watershed Management Authority
(AMSCLAE). Abroad an outboard motorboat, we collected samples and took
reading from over a dozen points around the lake to monitor lake’s
trends. One unfortunate trend I learned is that the lake’s clarity
has been declining since Hurricane Stan occurred.
