Mycological Herbarium
The Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium is located in the heart of the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona, co-housed with the University of Arizona Herbarium (ARIZ) in historic Herring Hall. The Gilbertson holds more than 40,000 dried fungal specimens and over 100,000 strains of endophytic fungi, with special emphasis on polypores, rust fungi, corticioid fungi, and diverse Pezizomycotina.
The Mycological Herbarium is named for Robert L. Gilbertson (Gil), a distinguished mycologist who was a member of the University of Arizona faculty from 1967 through his retirement from teaching in 1995, and as an Emeritus professor through his passing in 2011. The Herbarium was named in his honor in spring 2005 in a joyful celebration of Gil's many contributions. Since January 2005 the Herbarium has been curated by Dr. A. Elizabeth Arnold (Betsy), a professor in the School of Plant Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Today we are active in the community by providing educational tours, specimen identification, and research support for diverse partners across Arizona and worldwide.
