The mission of the Arizona Osteoporosis Coalition
is to raise awareness of the impact of osteoporosis on residents
of Arizona through education, communications and public activity
Osteoporosis is not just your grandmother's disease. This silent
disease starts early in life, but its effects are seen later in
life. Osteoporosis is the disease of weak, porous bones caused by
inadequate calcium, family history, inactivity, certain medications,
and lifestyle choices. Many people are not aware that it can be
prevented and treated.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation's 1996 figures,
almost 500,000 people in Arizona are at risk or already have this
debilitating disease. One in 2 women and one in 8 men will suffer
from osteoporosis-related fractures some time in their life. The
national cost of osteoporosis and associated fractures is estimated
at $10 billion and rising. Osteoporosis causes pain, disability,
and loss of independence. However, it is treatable and the amount
of bone loss can be prevented.
