Bone Builders
Bone Builders is a community-based education program aimed at helping
women aged 25-55 in Maricopa County reduce their risk of developing
osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes porous bones.
It develops gradually and may begin early in life, so prevention is
critical even for young people. Bone
Builders is a partnership between the University of Arizona Maricopa
County Cooperative Extension, Arizona Prevention Center, Maricopa
County Department of Health Services, Dairy Council of Arizona, Lutheran
Healthcare Network and many other organizations. Bone Builders is
currently providing volunteer peer education in the East Valley and
will expand to other parts of Maricopa County in the future. Volunteers
are needed to bring the osteoporosis message to women in their worksites,
churches, and community organizations. If you would like to get involved
in Bone Builders, call (602) 470-8086, ext. 316, or check our website
at http://www.bonebuilders.org/
If your organization or business would like to become a Bone Builders
partner or sponsor, please contact us. You can help support volunteer
training, program materials, posters, osteoporosis educational materials,
radio or TV Public Service Announcements, and other program materials.

AZOC Adult Education Projects
AZOC is expanding the Bone Builders program to counties around
Arizona. The first four counties - Gila, Pima, Pinal and Santa Cruz
counties, started in December 1999. The county projects are partnerships
starting with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, county
health departments and local organziations. Yuma, Mohave, Apache,
and Maricopa Counties will start in June 2000. These eight counties
will receive staff and operating funds from AzOC and ADHS. The adult

Building Better Bones
The Building Better Bones program is currently being funded by
the Arizona Nutrition Network in five counties (Coconino, Maricopa,
Mohave, Navajo and Yavapai County). The program is comprised
of three lessons and targets 5,000 children in the fifth and
sixth grade, enrolled in low-income schools. The three-lesson
curriculum focuses on those behaviors that help to build and
maintain bone density or mass including consuming a healthy
diet high in calcium and engaging in regular weight bearing
activity. This series of classes is designed in a way to deliver
the osteoporosis prevention messages through interactive, age-appropriate
methods. While some information is delivered through mini lectures,
other methods may include educational games, puzzles and portable
exhibits.
Information
for Kids - calcium related infomation for kids
Lesson 1
"Bone Up on Calcium"
Osteoporosis has been described as a pediatric disease with geriatric
outcomes. Students will learn that osteoporosis means "porous
bones" or bones full of holes". Porous bones are brittle
bones that can easily fracture. The critical time in which to build
bone density (bone mass) is before age 18. Students will learn that
their goal for calcium consumption is 130% of the daily value (1300
mg) and identify foods with calcium from each of the groups in the
food guide pyramid. Students will also recognize that they need
four servings from the milk group to meet their calcium needs.
Lesson 2
"Bones Move'em or Lose'em"
Regular physical activity improves health and a sense of well being.
To build and strengthen bones, the activities must be weight bearing
or strength training in nature. Weight bearing activities stimulate
bone formation and also strengthen muscles. Physical activity also
improves strength, balance and coordination, all of which are beneficial.
In this lesson, students will learn about which activities build
and strengthen their bones through four key words: push, pull, pound
and pick-up. Students will plan and keep an activity log to evaluate
their level of bone building activities.
Lesson 3
"Bone Up on Calcium at Fast Food Restaurants"
In today's society fast food is a way of life. Fast food can be
calcium rich but it also is very high in fat. Very few students
in the nine to eleven year age range consume enough calcium to build
bone mass while keeping fat consumption low to prevent heart disease
and obesity. The percent daily value for calcium in this age range
is 130%. The number of fat grams for this age range varies, but
is usually ranges from 60-75 grams a day. In this lesson, students
are given the opportunity to evaluate their own fat and calcium
intake utilizing fast food menu options and they learn about the
effects of excess fat in their diet.
