Birds in Low Desert Gardens
DESCRIPTION:
A variety of types of birds will be your ally and your nemesis in the garden.
DAMAGE:
Birds may dig up your seeds before they sprout or wait to dine on the tasty seedlings. However, because birds also eat insects, keep binoculars handy to make sure they are pulling up plants and not feasting on caterpillars.
MANAGEMENT:
Keep birds away with loud noises
Mylar tape or pie tins blowing in the wind
Sprinklers with motion detectors
Cover plants with floating row covers or wire cages.
You may want to start with transplants, which are less attractive to birds rather than seeds.
