It is a tree of the eastern U.S. that needs clean air (not in cities), and deep rich soil with abundant water. Pecan is a relative of hickory and certain varieties will grow in southeastern Arizona, but usually in a higher cooler area with deep soil and a water supply, such as Green Valley. Some are grown in Tucson, but I don't know if they would grow in Phoenix. Some of the native ash trees might give you the same overall appearance (but no nuts) and are better adapted to our climate. Another possibility might be Chines pistache (again, no nuts). These two will give you fall foliage color. The first thing is to spray the plants with a strong water spray but not too strong or the leaves may be damaged. Be sure to wash them off the undersides of the leaves as well. Repeating several times each week is necessary. You can also use a soapy water spray on the aphids but it may cause leaf burn if it's too strong. Cut them back approximately 1/2 removing any dead or crossing branches, make the cuts 1/4 inch above a bud or leaf node, remove all leaves and seal the cuts with Elmers glue to prevent borers from boring into the cane. Fertilize with a rose fertilizer available at nurseries following directions on the bag. Water well before and after fertilizing. When you are at the nursery pick up some rose spray for insects and powdery mildew. Both the powdery mildew and the aphids are attacking the roses now. When you strip off the leaves you will eliminate the problem for a couple weeks however once the roses leaf out again don't wait for the powdery mildew to attack, start spraying once a week. If the powdery mildew gets on the roses it is very difficult to eliminate. Each Saturday morning from 8 to 12 at Mesa Community College pruning demonstrations are conducted while volanteers are pruning the over 4000 roses. The following is an outline I use when giving a talk on rose care: SPRING ROSE CARE FINISH PRUNING ASAP BE SURE TO SEAL WITH ELMERS GLUE PULL MULCH BACK FERTILIZE ORGANO, HICKMAN'S OR OTHER ROSE FOOD FERTILIZE AFTER EACH BLOOM OR EVERY SIX WEEKS EXCEPT SUMMER IN SUMMER FERTILIZE AT HALF STRENGTH OR USE SLOW RELEASE SUCH AS OSMACOTE SUPLIMENT WITH LIQUID WATER SOLUBLE SUCH AS MAGNUM GROW, MIRACLE GROW, PETERS, ETC EVERY TWO WEEKS DISEASE AND INSECT CONTROL WASH DOWN AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK, MORE OFTEN IF POSSIBLE WATCH FOR POWDERY MILDEW If washing does not control then spray with FUNGINEX, IMMUNOX, TRIFORINE, RALLY OR IMMUNOX. Termites do not eat living material, so they wouldn't be a cause but might eat dead material. Most lawn problems in Arizona are due to cultural problems, especially watering and things that affect water penetration such as soil compaction and faulty irrigation systems. "If you want to have a good lawn, it's important to prepare the soil properly. First wet the soil down to a depth of 12-18 inches. Pull out all the weeds. Spread two inches of steer manure (well-composted) over the area. Scatter three pounds of ammonium phosphate for every hundred square feet on top of the manure. Dig the ground down thoroughly 12-18 inches, mixing in the manure and fertilizer. Rake the surface level, roll it to remove irregularities and rake again. The finished surface should be level with any surrounding sidewalk or patio. Rake in more than one direction and make sure the soil is firmed down before you set out plugs, stolons or sod. Wait to plant until the soil temperature is around 60 degrees F. Keep the soil moist until good root growth is established. Be certain you have an irrigation system in place that delivers water uniformly to all areas of the lawn. Once established, lawns require deep, less frequent irrigation. About 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water per week is a beginning guideline for summer irrigation of established lawn." "Many varieties of bulbs, as indicated by the Bulb Planting Outine, can be left in the soil for several seasons before they need to be lifted and divided. If the bed is to be used for summer flowers, however, it may be advisable to remove the bulbs each spring and re-plant in the fall, because high moisture throughout the summer months will cause rotting of bulbs. After the bulbs have finished blooming the watering frequency should be reduced and foliage allowed to harden-off and dry. Bulbs should not be dug until the foliage is completely dry and bulbs mature. Once the leaves have dried, uncover the top of a few bulbs without disturbing them. Tan to brown coats indicate bulb maturity. Immature bulbs are white. After lifting the bulbs from the bed, prune the roots close, remove the dried tops and store in a cool, dry place but not in an air-tight container or plastic bag." So far I have not seen this solution damage the leaves, but I always test spray a small area on any plant that is new to my garden, just to be safe. I also keep their numbers down to begin with by planting white sweet alyssum several places in the garden. These flowers attract tiny beneficial flies and wasps that use aphids as a food source for their larvae. Between the two tactics I find aphids easy to live with. Irrigation is available, and the site is in the sun virtually all day throughout the year. We would appreciate recommendations on good candidates -- on the order of 20 feet high -- for this space. Just trying to find out before I purchase. Bulbs are usually planted in late fall in the Phoenix area: Following is a brief article on when and how to plant bulbs. Used by permission from the author. -Olin ====================================================================== Bulbs for Spring Blooms By Bert Konzal October 1999 Now (October) is the time to prepare your soil for bulb planting. A little preparation now will produce healthier growth and more beautiful flowers in spring. Bulbs like good drainage and organic matter. It's best to spade in about four to six inches of organic material along with a low nitrogen fertilizer such as 5-10-10 which is rich in phosphorus and potassium. Bulbs need phosphorus and potassium to keep them strong and healthy. Water the area well and allow it to rest before planting your bulbs. With our warm temperatures it is best not to rush mother nature. Buy bulbs as soon as they are available and store them in a cool spot until planting time. The largest bulbs will produce the best flowers. The following favorites do very well in the valley: Ranunculus and Anemone: Plant about November 1st, about 2 inches deep and about 10 inches apart. Plant ranunculus with claws pointing down and anemone with point down. Keep moist but not wet. Daffodils or Narcissus: Plant about November 1st, about six inches deep and about six to nine inches apart. Plant with pointed end up. Dutch Iris: Plant about November 1st, about five to six inches deep and about six to eight inches apart. Tulips: Plant tulip bulbs about around the middle of November, but first you must keep them in your refrigerator for six to eight weeks so they will think they are up North. It's best to store in paper sack, in vegetable drawer. Plant bulbs about six inches deep and about six to nine inches apart. Hyacinths: Plant about November 1st, about six inches deep, about six to nine inches apart. Hyacinths, like tulips, must be kept in the refrigerator in order to have success. Hyacinths do well also in special hyacinth water jars. Freesia: Plant about November 1st, about six inches deep, and about six to nine inches apart. Freesia, like all bulbs, like morning sun and afternoon shade if possible. Gladiolus; Plant about November 1st, about six inches deep and about six to nine inches apart. Gladiolus do well with morning sun and afternoon shade. Petals may burn in the sun especially if corms are planted in December or January. Asiatic Lilies: Plant about November 1st, about six inches deep and about twelve to fifteen inches apart. Do best when they get morning sun and afternoon shade. Amaryllis: Plant bulbs about November 1st to the 15th , require morning sun and afternoon shade. Plant with about two thirds of the bulb above the surface of the ground. The larger the bulb the bigger the flowers. Please note that most of the above mentioned bulbs, corms, or fleshy root do well in containers as well as in the ground. In containers use a good quality potting soil instead of Arizona soil. I have two saguaros which planted themselves right in the middle of an ocotillo. Currently all are happily coexisting. The saguaros are about 4' high and the ocotillo is about 6' high. The ocotillo is acting as a nurse plant for the saguaros, giving them protection while they are young. Saguaros are tough and can take branches rubbing against them. Witness the saguaros which grow up and through palo verde trees, with the tree's branches blowing about in the wind. The only problem I see with your situation is competition for water if the plants are relying solely on natural rainfall. I would just watch that, but don't try to supplement water too much as both these plants can be killed by overwatering. Do you have a picture of it to send and/or tell me where I can locateit? A: Desert milkweed, Asclepias subulata, can often be found in the Phoenix area nurseries, but there are times when it isn't available at all. I wanted several for my own landscape a few years ago and I had to wait till mid-summer when suddenly everyone had them. Here are a couple of pictures of plants that are about 3 years old. I took these last year at Anthem Country Club. Don't hesitate to buy 1 gallon plants with only a few stems. As long as they are healthy and not root bound, they'll do fine and will fill out rapidly with many new stems. Avoid plants whose few stems are lying down - they will not stand upright again after you take them home. A nice small upright young plant will be a wonderful specimen in no time. (A single 'sideways' stem can be removed by cutting it at the base. New stems will grow vertically) You should be aware that Asclepias subulata attracts a wasp (whose name escapes me - sorry) that is unique to this plant. He's enormous and ugly by some people's standards, about 4" long. He will have no interest in you whatsoever, but some people are frightened by their size. Personally, I think they're great - really fascinating - but even I wouldn't want them right next to a patio area where I want to relax. Ten or fifteen feet away, they don't bother me a bit. The wasps will come when your plant is flowering and they'll sit on the blossoms at the tips of the stems enjoying the flowers. On a large plant you may see a dozen of these bugs at a time, but they fly around very little and are not at all bothersome except to the squeamish. Please please please don't prune Asclepias subulata! It's a marvelous landscape plant that will add a very definite straight vertical line element to your landscape design that's difficult to achieve with other desert natives. It's clean, producing almost no litter, evergreen, uses very little water and provides a lovely contrast with nearly anything else you might grow. People who just can't resist pruning sometimes whack them off at some arbitrary height above the ground creating a stubby little bundle like a whisk broom. There is no need to ever prune this plant! It's very well-behaved without human intervention and is useful in spots where you don't have much planting space, but want a nice full shrubby shape. Eventually, desert milkweed will grow into a symmetrical vase shape 3'-4' in diameter, up to 4' high, growing from a tidy compact 12"-24" clump. I highly recommend your plant selection!
