    19. In Memory of Robert R. Humphrey

    March 18, 2002


    Robert R. Humphrey, professor emeritus of range ecology at the University of Arizona, died March 13, 2002. He was 97.

    Humphrey joined the UA faculty as an associate professor in botany in 1948. He was involved in ecology, range management and was published extensively. His most notable book was "The Boojum and Its Home."

    Humphrey was born in Palo Alto, Calif. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in botany and geology from the University of Minnesota, graduation in 1933.

    He worked as a range ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service for 15 years, then as a range conservationist with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service before working for the University. He retired from the UA in 1966. After he retired, he and his wife traveled extensively in Mexico, Baja and California studying the boojum tree and ecology along the United States-Mexico border.

    Humphrey is survived by his wife of 72 years, Roberta; four children, Shirley Schoof of Tucson, Lois Angus of Las Vegas, Alan Humphrey of West Kingston, R.I., and Beth Grady of Grass Valley, Calif; sister, Heidi Haas of Tucson; brother, David Humphrey of Prescott; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

    At his request, no services will be held. Donations may be made in his memory to the Nature Conservancy, the Tucson Medical Center Hospice Unit or a charity of your choice.
