Sarah McDonald, agricultural resources and economics sophomore, was awarded first place for a public relations campaign submitted to the Agricultural
Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) convention held June 14 - 17, 2003. The
annual convention took place in Kansas City, Mo.

McDonald developed her campaign in a class offered through the
agricultural education department, "Communicating Knowledge in Agriculture
and Life Sciences." Included in the project were a brochure, news release,
display board, public announcement and newsletter.

Her campaign focused on increasing awareness within the ranching and
environmental communities of the need for and benefits of collaboratively
    planned sustainable agriculture.

"Sarah is an outstanding student and a reflection of how this department is teaching industry based method," said Jack Elliot, professor in the agricultural education department and advisor to ACT. "We (the department) are preparing students for the real world, using 85 field-approved agricultural education and communication competencies."

ACT members Heather Jepsen, Amanda Leister, co-advisor Samantha
Alvis, all from the agricultural education department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, attended the conference as well. Alvis participated on the quiz bowl team that won second place.

The University of Arizona ACT club was activated in January of 2003, joining 21 other chapters in the United States and Canada. This was the UA's first time entering the contest.

National ACT is the only student organization of its kind within the agricultural communications field. It is designed for college students who have a professional interest in the field of communications related to agriculture.
