- By UA News Services
August 29, 2003
Eugene G. Sander, vice provost and dean, invites the University community to a reception to honor Merle Jensen, associate director of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station and assistant dean sponsored research in the College of Agriculture. Jensen is retiring from the UA following 35 years of distinguished service as a professor and administrator.
A reception will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Memorial Center, Catalina Room, to honor him for his teaching, research, service and overall dedication to the University of Arizona.
Jensen has devoted his career to controlled environment agriculture, designing intensive food production systems. He has personally traveled to more than 60 countries demonstrating the application of technologies that he and his colleagues researched and developed at the University of Arizona.
For the agriculture industry in Arizona, he spearheaded the initiation of the lettuce and citrus research councils, which are governed by Arizona farmers. In the last 10 years, scientists at the University have received numerous grants from these councils to benefit the lettuce and citrus industries through their research findings.
Jensen was instrumental in raising the funds to develop the Karsten Turfgrass Research Center and the Controlled Environment Agricultural Center at the University of Arizona. The research, education and outreach programs at these two centers are becoming well-known for their expertise in an arid lands setting.
His presentations on "Tomorrow’s Agriculture Today" have intrigued audiences at banquets, conventions, management and service clubs and business conferences throughout the world. He also has served on numerous national and international boards and committees. - Updated: August 29, 2003
