- 17. Vicki Chandler President-Elect of American Society of Plant Physiologists

Vicki Chandler, professor in the departments of molecular cellular biology and plant sciences, is the new president-elect of the American Society of Plant Physiologists (ASPP).
Her peers in the 6,000-member plant science society elected Chandler to this one-year term before she assumes the position of president next year.
Chandler joined the UA faculty in 1997 and was previously professor of biology and a member of the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon.
She is the principal investigator and manager of several maize studies and a project on "Functional Genomics of Chromatin: Global Control of Plant Gene Expression." The National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture support this research.
Service on many national advisory panels and organizations includes the Executive Committee of ASPP, associate editor of ASPP's journal Plant Physiology, several National Science Foundation panels and projects, and National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, and United States Department of Agriculture activities. She has participated on the Gordon Research Conferences as a council member, elected board of trustees member, and vice-chair of the board of trustees. Recently, Chandler was elected chair of the Gordon Research Conferences Board of Trustees for 2001. She is the recipient of a number of science awards, and she has written more than 60 refereed journal articles, manuscripts, book chapters, reviews and commentary articles. Founded in 1924, ASPP has a membership of academic, government and industry plant science researchers from the United States and more than 50 nations.
