Learn more about how urban growth in east Tucson’s Rincon Valley affects our natural resources and what is being done to understand and preserve them.
The Center on the Impacts of Urban Development in Southern Arizona’s Desert Environment (CIUDAD) is offering a workshop and open house on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Academy Village visitor center, located at 13,701 East Old Spanish Trail, in the Rincon Valley near Saguaro National Monument East. Community members are encouraged to attend.
Presentations will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and open house will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. There also will be a list of volunteer opportunities and information on how the community can become involved.
CIUDAD is a joint effort between members of the Rincon Institute, who develop information to protect the Rincon Valley’s ecosystem, and scientists in the School of Renewable Natural Resources at the University of Arizona. The group is working to better understand the impacts of development on natural resources through science and education.
Researchers have been studying water, vegetation, and wildlife in the Rincon Valley for more than 10 years and are using this information for on-the-ground natural resource conservation efforts.
Through research, monitoring, public outreach and educational programming, CIUDAD seeks to assist public decision-makers, researchers, planners, developers, resource managers, landowners, and the general public in developing innovative strategies for integrating conservation and environmental quality into urbanizing landscapes.
The workshops are free to the public. For more information contact Randy Gimblett at (520) 621-6360 or by e-mail.
