    3. State 4-H Leader Bill Peterson Retires

After serving as the State 4-H Leader for 11 years, Bill Peterson retired on March 31st.

Peterson has spent most of his life involved in the 4-H Program, including a 33 year career in five states. While under Bill's guidance, the Arizona 4-H program saw enrollment increase from 15,507 in 1992 to nearly 108,000 in 2004. Bill attributes this growth to the strong emphasis on youth and adult partnerships. He says, "4-H is thriving in Arizona, and much of that is due to the strong focus of youth and adult partnerships within the program."

In addition to being the state leader, Peterson has always supported foreign exchange programs such as the 4-H Japanese Exchange program. Over the years he has made sure that this continued to be an important part of Arizona's 4-H program. Because of his efforts hundreds of young people have had the experience of a lifetime learning about other cultures while making friends across the Pacific. He has provided invaluable leadership for the program on the national level, helping to keep it strong and vibrant into the 21st Century.

In recognition of his efforts, and to honor him on his retirement, several individuals have created the Bill & Judy Peterson 4-H International Youth Travel Endowment Fund to provide perpetual support for the 4-H International Exchange and Japanese Exchange Programs in Arizona.
