    8. Qwest Foundation Announces 4-H Grant for Statewide Character Education

The Qwest Foundation has awarded a grant of $27,750 to the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation to support statewide 4-H Character Education programs in Arizona. 4-H agents in every county will be able to use grant funds in support of in-school and 4-H after school programs that build on a national initiative and six years of successful 4-H character education programs in Arizona.

Representatives from Qwest and the Qwest Foundation will officially present the check for this award at the Arizona State Fair on Sunday, October 17, 2004, in the Kurtz Arena at the State Fairgrounds in Phoenix before the livestock auction.

“This grant will allow 4-H Youth Development to leverage its impact and provide an exceptional program emphasizing the importance of good character in our schools,” says Joe Leisz, executive director, Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation. “This program’s expansion follows past successes, including lower delinquency rates, higher test scores, and an improved educational environment where all youth have a better chance of success.”

4-H Character Education programs currently reach more than 50,000 young people, and funding from this grant will allow 4-H to expand this program in schools across the state. The award will provide funding for volunteer and teacher training programs and seed money for activities featuring 4-H’s proven hands-on educational activities, including raising livestock (like those exhibited at the State Fair) and baking blue-ribbon winning pies, cakes and breads.

Arizona 4-H, a program of the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, currently reaches over 130,000 youth across the state, and involves more than 3,000 certified volunteer leaders helping young people live 4-H’s motto: “To Make the Best Better.”
