- 7. Arizona 4-H's Photo-History Online
- Retirees, UA alumni, agriculture enthusiasts and Arizona history buffs will enjoy this new Web site which gives 4-H Alumni a place to share their history and memories of 4-H experiences from days gone by.
The Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation's new Web site http://ag.arizona.edu/4-h_foundation/ is a home on the Internet for just some of the images housed in the new Oliver Anderson Family 4-H Museum, which was officially opened at the Maricopa Agricultural Center in Maricopa, Arizona, on October 6th.
Arizona's 4-H program has a long and illustrious history. Nationally, 4-H's history dates to 1902, when A.B. Graham organized the first 4-H club in the basement of the Clark County Courthouse in Springfield Township, Ohio. The 4-H museum is open Monday - Friday at the Maricopa Agricultural Center. Since 4-H school tours are regularly held at Big MAC, it is best to call ahead when visiting (520-568-2273).
In recent years, 4-H Youth Development programs in Arizona have been organized in local communities with a continued emphasis on a balance of experiences for young people in project work, personal development opportunities, leadership and citizenship.
Webmaster Andrew Olson has created an online archive holding many of the photos contained in the museum's collection of over 1,000 items -- making them viewable from any computer in the world. Included are photos from Arizona's first 4-H club in Chandler, which started in 1913, and the first gathering of 4-H Club Champions on the UA Campus in 1916 (an event which continues to this day as the State 4-H Teen Congress). Photos also include images of 4-H youth visiting our state's congressional leaders through the years; youth are shown with Senators Barry Goldwater and Congressman Mo Udall in some of the photos documenting 4-H's National Conference trips.
