    6. Salute to Educators Award

The JC Penney Afterschool Salute to Educators Award was presented to Lisa Lauxman, UA Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development, Jan Norquest, Coconino County 4-H Agent, Darcy Tessman- Cochise County 4-H Agent and Sabrina Tuttle, San Carlos Extension Agent. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is one of 15 nationwide recipients of a $10,000 grant to improve the quality of 4-H Afterschool programs in communities across America.

Arizona 4-H will use the grant to build the capacity of local 4-H Afterschool programs like the one in Sierra Vista, Cochise County , where 4-H Afterschool partners with the City of Sierra Vista Parks and the Leisure KIDS WORLD after school program to provide 4-H Junior Master Gardener hands-on activities and educational programs at five sites reaching more than 250 youth. The grant also will support 4-H Afterschool programs across the state -- in Williams, Coconino County, and the San Carlos Apache Reservation.

“We’ve given 4-H the resources to help train staff, implement sound youth development practices, create new after-school programs, and strengthen existing programs,” said Ed Solczak, Vice President of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. “In turn, our resources support our most valuable resource—the children of this country. I know of no better investment we can make in our future.”

4-H Afterschool makes opportunities available for youth to participate in fun activities as they develop valuable life skills and creates safe places for kids in the after-school hours by collaborating with other youth organizations to create new after-school programs and strengthen existing ones.
