- 4. Endowments Support 4-H Scholarships
- Three new endowments in the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation will increase the number of awards available to Arizona's 4-H members who are continuing their educational experience in college.
In addition to numerous scholarships already being awarded, the Pima County Horse Project endowment and the Everett Grondin Memorial endowment will award a total of four new scholarships this year. The newly established Don Landeen Memorial endowment will award an annual scholarship next year for the first time next year.
For many years it was the dream of the Pima County Horse Project leaders and members to have a scholarship fund set up to provide college scholarships to Pima County horse project members. This endowment -- a permanently invested fund of $10,000 whose interest will support annual scholarship awards -- is the realization of that dream. The three scholarships that will be awarded this year will recognize those 4-H horse project members from Pima County that have excelled in the classroom, the arena, and have fully participated in the Pima County horse project.
Everett Grondin was a long time volunteer in the Pima County 4-H program. Working with his wife Cecilia, Everett blazed many trails in 4-H. In 1968, Everett became a leader in the swine project. Over 30 years later the swine project is still one of the largest projects in Pima County. After his passing in 2002 his family decided to create this fund in his honor, and in recognition of his commitment to young people and the Pima County 4-H program an annual scholarship will be awarded in his name using the interest income earned from this fund.
Don Landeen was a great supporter of the 4-H program. He became a sheep leader in 1971. Throughout the years, Don served as Pima County sheep director, helped with the Junior Livestock Auction, and assisted in the beef project. In recognition of his service, he was the 1976 recipient of the Friend of 4-H Award. The Don Landeen Memorial Scholarship endowment was officially created after his passing in 2004, and the first annual award will be made in 2006. Scholarship endowments are an incredible way to honor an important 4-H leader or memorialize a loved one. Funds given to create a named endowment (normally $10,000 within a three to five year period) are invested by the 4-H Foundation and only the interest income is used to award annual scholarships. Over time, scholarship endowments will make awards valued at a greater amount than the initial gift establishing the fund.
