    8. International Arid Lands Consortium Awards $700,000 for Research in Middle East and United States

Kennith L.E. Foster, International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) president and director of the UA Office of Arid Lands Studies, recently awarded $700,000 in grants to scientists in Israel, Jordan and the United States for research on arid lands issues. IALC is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring the problems and solutions unique to arid and semiarid regions.

The research and demonstration grants were awarded to scientists in Israel, Jordan and the United States for collaborative efforts in arid lands issues that include studies on irrigation, wildlife impact on ecosystems, water use, advanced GIS and rainfall management.

The IALC focuses on fostering collaboration between academics in Israel, Jordan and the United States who all share similar arid lands concerns.

"We are very pleased with the high quality of research that the IALC is funding. This year's projects are some of the strongest in their respective fields in terms of scientific value, and their level of collaboration between Middle Eastern and American researchers is unmatched," said Foster said.

"Water is a universal problem, especially in our part of the world," said Gideon Witkon, director of the JNF-KKL Land Development Authority, "Israel and Jordan are co-dependent when it comes to water resources."
