    1. Pastor named new extension director for Maricopa County

    At 3.8 million people, Maricopa County is the 4th largest county in the United States. Yet even with the high population, in the 2002 Census it was ranked 20th in the nation for agricultural production with over 627, 0000 acres in production on 2,110 farms.

    Monica Kilcullen Pastor, the new county extension director for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension office in Maricopa County, will provide leadership for UA faculty and staff who offer educational opportunities for people in this unique blend of urban and rural communities. “I appreciate the selection committee recognizing my passion and enthusiasm for Extension in their recommendation for me for the Extension Director position”, said Monica Pastor. “We have excellent programs and one of my goals is to bring awareness of these programs to the residents of Maricopa County.” Pastor will begin work on September 24, 2007.

    Pastor will also work with advisory boards and the county board of supervisors to assess evolving community needs. How cooperative extension’s mission, “bringing research-based information into communities to help people improve their lives” can be used to answer those needs will be a primary focus of Pastor’s work.

    Since 1997 she has been a University of Arizona faculty member in agriculture and natural resources with the agricultural literacy program.

    Cooperative Extension was established nationwide in 1914 with the Smith-Lever Act. The purpose of extension is to bring the education and research of a state’s land grant university to the people in communities across that state. Funding for extension is through federal, state and county support as well as gifts and grants awarded to faculty in each of the county offices.

    In Maricopa County, Cooperative Extension has UA faculty responsible for a variety of programs including 4-H clubs and after-school programs, urban and commercial horticulture programs including the master gardener volunteer program, turf grass management, field crops research, nutrition education, early childhood brain development education for child care providers, osteoporosis programs, food safety training and education, consumer education and water conservation education.

    Pastor is an Arizona native; she was born in Tucson and grew up in Tempe. She and her family reside in Mesa. She has a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Arizona and a Master of Science in Education from Arizona State University. She spent the first 18 years of her career with the Arizona and Maricopa County Farm Bureaus.
