The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has named seven faculty members from The University of Arizona as 2006 AAAS Fellows.

Ian Pepper, Howard Ochman, Hans VanEtten, M. Bonner Denton, Hsinchun Chen, Aden Baker Meinel and George Timothy Bowden are among 449 new fellows from across the nation.

Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. "Members have been awarded this honor because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications," according to AAAS.

New fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin at the February 2007 AAAS annual meeting in San Francisco.

Fellows were announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on November 24.

Pepper, professor of soil, water and environmental science and director of the UA's Environmental Research Lab, was recognized for distinguished research and teaching contributions in soil and environmental microbiology specializing in the molecular ecology of the environment.

Ochman, professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics and of ecology and evolutionary biology, was recognized for outstanding contributions to knowledge of evolution of bacterial genomes, particularly rates and patterns of horizontal gene transfer and the evolution of pathogenicity islands.

VanEtten, professor of plant pathology, was recognized for identifying plant pathogenicity genes in fungi and the conditionally dispensable
(supernumerary) chromosomes on which they reside.

Denton, professor of chemistry, was recognized for distinguished contributions to the fields of analytical chemistry and chemical instrumentation through advanced optical and ion detection techniques.

Chen, professor of management information systems, was recognized for contributions to scholarship and development in information systems, digital library, biomedical informatics and intelligence and security informatics.

Meinel, professor emeritus of optical sciences, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to optical science and for many advances in physics and astronomy.

Bowden, professor of cell biology and anatomy, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of ultraviolet, light-induced signal transduction pathways leading to skin cancer and for leadership in interdisciplinary graduate education.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world's largest general scientific society, and publisher of the journal Science (www.sciencemag.org). AAAS was founded in 1848, and includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals. Science has the largest paid circulation of any peer-reviewed general science journal in the world, with an estimated total readership of 1 million. The non-profit AAAS (www.aaas.org) is open to all and fulfills its mission to "advance science and serve society" through initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education and more.
