    1. Third Annual Arizona Weed Contest and Training Symposium

The third Annual Arizona Weed Contest and Training Symposium will take place November 17, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Maricopa Agricultural Center near Casa Grande, 37860 W. Smith-Enke Road,Maricopa, AZ.

    The day will include:
Weed Identification: Participants will identify up to 25 weeds that will be in various stages of growth from seed to mature plants. Emphasis will be placed on seedling weed identification. All weeds that grow in Arizona are subject to be on the contest regardless of growing season. Participants will be given an answer sheet with potential weeds listed to avoid confusion over differing common names used.

Herbicide Identification: Participants will identify 8 to 10 herbicides based on the response of various crops and weeds. Any herbicide labeled for use in Arizona is subject to be on the contest and may include pre plant incorporated, pre plant, or post emergence applications. An answer sheet will be provided with a list of potential herbicides and application methods. Each herbicide will be applied perpendicular to the row across all crops and weeds at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 times the normal use rate.

Simulated Production Problem: Each participant (in randomly chosen teams) will determine the cause of one or two production related problems. To arrive at a conclusion and recommendation the contestant will question the "farmer" about inputs and practices related to the crop. Contestants will be judged on understanding and solving the problem, recommendations for this year's crop, and recommendations for next year's crop. Any crop grown in Arizona is fair game.

Equipment Calibration Problem Set: Participants will solve equipment calibration and pesticide mixing word problems. Problems may include standard sprayer application, banded applications, granular application, and aerial application scenarios.

Training: Each section will be covered in detail to provide information and tips for optimizing weed management in Arizona Agriculture.

Scoring: Scoring will be used only for the purpose of awarding sponsor provided prizes to top two or three participants in each category listed on the registration form on the reverse side. Scores will be kept strictly confidential. If you are uncomfortable with scoring you are encouraged to participate anyway - it is not necessary to turn in your answer sheets. Participants from last year found this program to be highly valuable.
