January traditionally marks a new year with new opportunities. The same held true in the UA Animal Sciences Department. The New Year brought us a new semester, new students and new leadership, On January 2, Dr Ron Allen "took over the reins" as Head of the Animal Sciences Department.

Although new to the position Allen is certainly no stranger to the University of Arizona
and has been an active member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences since coming to Arizona from Michigan State University in 1980. Allen's contributions to the college have been in teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses, overseeing his highly respected research program and serving in many administrative roles including Associate Head of the Animal Sciences Department since 2003.

As with many young people in Texas, Allen was very active livestock shows and judging contests, particularly livestock and meat judging. Interest in these activities led him to Texas A&M where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences and was active in traditional Animal Sciences undergraduate activities, including Intercollegiate judging competition.
