MASTER GARDENERS

Arizona Master Gardeners are university-trained volunteers who serve as community educators. They work with the University of Arizona providing research based information on environmentally responsible gardening and landscaping to the public. After completing a semester long course, concentrating on gardening and the environment, Master Gardeners Associates volunteer to serve their communities. Master Gardening is all about public education. Working through their local University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Agent they serve by
  • staffing plant question phone lines and plant clinics
  • giving talks to local groups
  • introducing children to gardening
  • presenting information at conferences, workshops, seminars and trade shows
  • organizing educational programs and conferences
  • creating and maintaining demonstration gardens which showcase new plants, new planting methods, composting, & new irrigation methods
  • write newspaper, magazine and newsletter articles
  • develop and produce pamphlets, bulletins, fact sheets, books and web pages

    After completing their volunteer commitment they become Certified Master Gardeners.
    The Master Gardening Program was begin in 1972 in the Seattle area and is now found in every state in the United States.
