Alaska Master Gardener ONLINE!
Let’s face it: Gardening in Alaska is not as easy is California—but with a little extra work--we can still produce a lot of our own food and preserve some of the food we produce in the summer for the winter. This course will help you not only improve the amount of vegetables you can produce in your garden, but it will also help you teach others how to do the same. Hopefully the course will help you work smarter not harder in your garden!
The course is comprised of 12 self-paced lessons (see course outline) and should take no more than 40 hours to complete. You will have one year to complete the course. If you have not completed the course within a year, you can request an extension with a plausible excuse.
When you enroll in the course, you’ll have the option of choosing a paper-based course or an online course. The online course offers the chance to interact with other Master Gardener students through Discussion Board, easy access to online gardening sites, and a more interactive learning experience. Students will also receive a CD with important course documents that you can reference after you complete the course.
The course fee is $75 for students who plan to complete 40 volunteer hours in Alaska. There are many ways to fulfill this volunteer commitment. You could grow food for local Elders or a food bank, help a 4H club or youth group with a garden project, volunteer at your local extension office, organize a community garden, teach a garden workshop to a group or class, or even write articles for a local newspaper or Master Gardener Club! Volunteer hours must be completed in Alaska to qualify for this course. This might be the perfect tool to start a community garden if five people in your community decide to take the course—that’s 200 volunteer hours!
For students who are unable or do not wish to complete 40 hours of volunteer service in Alaska, the course fee is $250.
